Our first World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) Seattle event of the year is scheduled for Saturday, July 7, 2012!. This is our WNBR Seattle Downtown Daylight Ride 2012. 2012 marks the nineth year (since 2004) that Seattle will be staging WNBR events.

While we encourage riders to "bare as you dare" (it is Nude Recreation Week, afterall), nudity is not required or expected. Just come ride with us dressed for fun and spread cheer and inspire others with our pro-cycling message! You are always allowed to strip down as much as you like, when you feel comfortable. A swimsuit or undies are recommended if you want to go in the water without being naked. Remember, nude is not lewd! Looking for ideas? *Search YouTube for WNBR Seattle videos. There are many created by riders as well as spectators.
This is a grassroots, collaborative, D.I.Y. event, so bring your own body paint (and supplies), creative wearable art, musical instruments and bike art supplies. Things can go much smoother when you bring your friends to help out! Tell them to bring their bikes and they might even ride along with you! Here are some body art resources to consider.

As always, the latest scoop on the WNBR Seattle rides can be found here on our WNBR Seattle Wiki Website.

The new WNBR Downtown Seattle Daylight Ride start and end location is at Olympic Sculpture Park Beach, featuring a sandy shoreline + a sweeping view of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains! (Please refer to Olympic Sculpture Park Map). The address of Olympic Sculpture Park is 2901 Western Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121. If you look at the map, the beach is located at the North end of Foster Foundation Path, on the South end of Myrtle Edwards Park, off the Elliott Bay Trail/Terminal 91 Bike Path. Please note we will not be going into the main areas of the park naked.

Organizers
The best way to contact organizer <s>Daniel Johnson and the WNBR Seattle team is via telephone: (206) 452-3820 (Skype number - please call first) or (206) 369 - 2661 (mobile phone/voice mail - please only call if you need to speak with Daniel immediately)</s>
The Ride Starts at 2:30 PM!! The ride will be an amazing tour of the urban core of Seattle! We will go along the Central Waterfront, which now through Pioneer Square, Downtown, Pike Place Farmer's Market, the Pike/Pine Coridor, Capitol Hill, Belltown and the Seattle Center International Fountain (video) and back to the OSP Beach to finish off the day with our second year of the Seattle Skinny dipping Record Attempt. An after party may follow later.

We hope to have a route map up soon, but its more or less the same as last year except for no pre-party in Belltown and possible Pioneer Square re-route changes due to the Fire Festival. The new route will also highlight a new attraction, the Seattle Great Wheel, a 175-foot tall Ferris wheel being installed at the end of Pier 57.

Please bring a creative minimum amount of clothing for the ride (undies, loincloth, sock, pasties, loincloth or thong) in case you need it. Important: You will also want to make sure you use the restroom well before we leave!!!

::Please note: We may be entering the Seattle Center from a different entrance this year. Please follow instructions from ride marshals before and during the ride. We are expected to enter from the North this year, which is different than in previous years.

When we enter the large Seattle Center International Fountain (video) area, we must all get off our bikes and walk with our bikes into the fountain area. Bicycles are not permitted down into the water area. Lock your bike, walk down the ramps. We will spend no more than 15-20 minutes in the fountain. Please also be very polite and vocal (or ring bells) when passing around adults and children in the area. We have also been asked not to use amplified sound such as megaphones in this area. The Seattle Center puts up signs to alert sensitive people to the presence naked people. Thank you for ensuring a safe and fun Seattle Center experience for everybody!

Don't forget to have your bike tuned up, tires pumped and make sure your bicycle is properly fit to your size.

Come to our Crazy Pre-Ride Party at the beach!
Tourists + Seattleites alike love the creativity, exuberance + spontaneity of the naked cyclists!

Please consider decorating your body and your bike with WNBR themes or bring musical instruments! What to bring.

The Pre-Ride Party formally commences at 12:30 PM and ends at 2:30 PM.

The Pre-Ride Party will be great place to body paint, decorate your bike, finalize your handmade costumes, adjust your helmet, tie your shoes, use the restroom one last time (make sure you check the location of nearby restrooms first), inflate your tires, find helpful people to answer all of your questions, check the latest information about the route, take soom cool snapshots of your ensemble and meet other like minded free-wheeling folk! Yes friends, it's all that and so much more!

If you don't want your picture taken in the public areas outside of the building or on the ride while naked, please consider wearing a disguise, sunglasses or wearing clothes. There are many reasons people may not want to go naked but still ride with us in solidarity. Please also see our photography policy.

Post-Ride Beach Wade-in
Inspired by other WNBR wade-in traditions such as at the end of WNBR Vancouver (BC, Canada) and WNBR Brighton & Hove (UK), we're planning to set a new record for skinny dipping at a Seattle beach! So stick around with us after the Seattle Center! (You can easily throw on your undies until you reach the beach after rinsing off your body paint in the fountain, if you wish).

By the way, the Seattle Center has no problem with us washing off our body paint in the International Fountain. They explained to us that they actually have a very thorough filter system because of all the messy kids (+ fun-loving adults!) Better to wash off in the fountain than in the Puget Sound! Keep it clean!

We may also have an after party after the wade-in.

After Party Anyone?!
We may later hit a bar for a clothed social and after ride decompression (Belltown, Fremont, Queen Anne?) One thing we've learned over the years is that many naked cyclists like to drink beer and chill after the ride to recall what happened during the ride, plan for the future and meet like-minded creative, fun-loving folks like themselves.

More info
For those carpooling/driving, limited parking is available in the area. We encourage you to take the bus, walk or bike to the start location! Even better, come with your friends, family and co-workers! A bathroom is located up the Elliott Bay Trail, within the Elliott Bay Park (probably ~6-8 minute bike ride away), at the OSP facility, Cal Anderson Park and the Seattle Center (see Google map).

Donations!
Your generous support and donations help make good things happen! Please consider making a generous donation to offset our expenses, whatever you can afford. $5 - $30 sliding scale is suggested, but nobody will be turned away for lack of ca$h because we love you and we don't want any obstacles for you to join in the fun! We do have hundreds of dollars of expenses such as renting the art space and promotional expenses (web + other expenses). Thanks!

Clothing-optional beach events
WNBR + Beach socials/meetings/pre-ride preparation parties. Stay tuned.

Critical mAss Rides
Note this is not a clothing-optional ride per se, however, in recent years there has been significant clothing-free and topfree participation, especially for the monthly rides with the warmest weather.

Show your support for cyclists' rights and help us beat last year's July record for underwearing, decorated, naked + topfree participants! Do not miss this HUGE + CRAZY RIDE with hundreds of cyclists! The monthly Seattle Critical Mass Bike Rides historically have had a small but crazy group of artistic, naked, underwearing and topfree participants during warmest months to add to the massive amount of creativity and excitement Critical Mass already has in the summer!

*Jul. 27, Fri - Seattle Critical mAss

*Aug. 31, Fri - Seattle Critical mAss

Meet 5:30 PM at Westlake Park, Ride at 6 PM

401 Pine Street, Seattle, WA

What & Why: "on the last friday of every month in over 100 cities around the world cyclists congregate together to ride in demonstration and in celebration. critical mass has no leaders and no set agenda and people come together to ride for many different reasons.

just a few of those reasons are... to assert cyclists right to the road, to promote bikes as a fun, healthy, viable alternative to cars, to build a greater sense of community, to get more folks on bikes, or simply to celebrate bike love and ride in solidarity with other like minded individuals and have some fun!

overall the ride is what you make it!" (from the Seattle Critical Mass Website)

We need your money to help make the magic happen! Please click here to go to our donations page to support our event! We need money for permitting fees, rentals, materials costs, multiple web domains for our different affiliated rides + privacy registration fees. We also need money for promotion expenses (flying, printing and advertising). Our organizers would also appreciate money for software updates which are very costly (Adobe Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks; Apple Final Cut Pro, iMovie; Hype and other programs). We also have a separate legal fund account, which has not been active since 2010.

Goals
Global mission
The message of WNBR focuses on promoting cycling. Find out more about the WNBR global message see the global WNBR message section

Local goals
"Reclaim our streets, our bodies, our parks, our city, our self-reliance!"

Beyond the above goals, the WNBR Seattle event focuses on the following:

#Community building. Have fun and express our creativity while engaging and enjoying various communities in Seattle. Celebrate both the diversity and the oneness of the human experience.

#Protest oil dependency and advocate renewable energy sources; the joy of cycling; sustainable, car-free transportation solutions; and walkable communities. Bicycles are BEST - Better Ecologically Sustainable Transport.

#Bring attention to the local safety concerns of cyclists. Help people begin to see cyclists and share the road. Sharing the road does not mean cars get the lane and bikes get the gutter or car door lane! (See also ghostcycle.org)

#Rejoice in the power and individuality of our bodies. Promote body-positive ideals and activities. Advocate the development of free beaches in Seattle and encourage more family-friendly, clothing-optional use of community spaces.

#Show solidarity with other naked cycling events around the world. Many WNBR events will be riding on the same date.

#Generate interest in similar progressive and artistic regional events such as those organized by The City Repair Project - Village Building Convergence, Car Free Seattle, Seattle Hempfest, Fremont Arts Council, Solstice Cyclists (SolsticeCyclist.org), Seattle Critical Mass/Ass, Body Pride Ride (BPR), Naked Pumpkin Run Seattle, Green America's Green Festival Seattle, Burning Man and Regional Burning Man events.

For more info, please see our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What to wear? Do not fear!
:For details, please see our Frequently asked questions

The World Naked Bike Ride dress code is "Bare As You Dare"... How bare is that ? How dare is that ?...Its all up to you, you decide what you are comfortable with. NO ONE IS EXCLUDED OR DISCRIMINATED AGAINST based on levels of clothing, bodypaint, or anything else, for that matter!

PLEASE be creative and colorful! Bodypainting and bike decorating is highly encouraged! See the above section on creative expression and also visit our body art page.

The laws on nudity, for the most part are a bit vague, difficult and often unpopular to enforce. The principal concern of most citizens is to eliminate creepy, predatory, exploitative, destructive and abusive behavior. WNBR is a fun, inspirational, non-confrontational body-positive event with a positive message of hope. That is why the ride has been such a huge hit and so many are supportive. Just use common sense and mind your manners! Nude is not lewd!

Since most of us did not grow up in a body-positive society, many will look at you with curiosity and amusement. You will probably notice that different sections of town have different cultural reactions to nudity. Some may feel mildly intimidated because they still might have issues with their own bodies and your shameless ways are unsettling to their body-phobic world. Just be friendly and respectful and things should be fine. Remember we are all human and we all have the same parts.

::"Gymnophobia (from the Greek word for nude gymnos) is the fear of being (or seeing others) naked. A gymnophobic person usually wants to prevent others from experiencing the freedom of not wearing clothes."

If you are concerned, you probably don't need to cover up much to be "legal". With the incredible transforming powers of a little body paint, liquid latex, a strategically placed sock, or a piece of duct tape you too can transform the average city streaking naked wild cyclist into "The legal city streaking naked wild cyclist". Be creative: a little imagination can change everything.

Organization
WNBR Seattle, Seattle Naked Pumpkin Run, Hemp Ride and Jaybird Run are productions of the Organic Living Party (OLP). OLP is, in part, a revival of the German Lebensreform movement. OLP's motto: "Participatory arts, recreation, citizen activism and play are not luxuries!"

Meetings are held to organize WNBR Seattle and are currently facilitated by Daniel Johnson, who would like to see development of an independent collective that would take over management of the event.

Welcome to Seattle's World Naked Bike Ride wiki pages!

Every year, in cities around the world, thousands ride bikes naked to celebrate human-powered transport and the power and individuality of the human body. WNBR demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and offers a simple, cheap, healthy + fun alternative to car culture. We hope you can join us!

First time? Visit the main page of the WNBR International wiki website which has the most info on our international event.

Preparation

Seattle Archive

In 2003, Seattle became only the second city in the world to organize a WNBR event, the first of which was launched in June of 2004.
Please visit our Seattle Archive page. Please contact Troy Mars at [email protected] to add any links or info to a particular ride. The Archive provides a way for people to share Facebook and google photo albums, YouTube and news article links. The more emails I get the more richer experience the Archive will be for everyone. Thanks for your help.

Contact form

You can contact us by filling out form on the WNBR Seattle Join page.

Wiki website

 • You are here! This is the WNBR Seattle wiki site (most detailed info about the events can be found here).

Organizers

The best way to contact organizer Daniel Johnson and the WNBR Seattle team is via telephone: (206) 452-3820 (Skype number - please call first) or (206) 369 - 2661 (mobile phone/voice mail - please only call if you need to speak with Daniel immediately)

Other, less effective, methods:

 • Fill out form on the WNBR Seattle join page (use the comment area and select a ride or rides from the drop down menu).
 • E-mail Daniel directly using his temporary, spam-reduction e-mail address: j0in+hefun@ WNBR sea++le d0+ 0rg (use only letter equivalents, for example use "t" instead of "+".)
 • Fill out form on the main WNBR page (use the comment area and select Seattle from the drop down menu).
 • Leave a message at his discussion page (which he doesn't check very often)

Flickr

We don't have a dedicated photography sharing group on Flickr yet, but its probably just a matter of time. Click here for search results for WNBR Seattle on Flickr. You can find many images in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Naked Exuberance Group. Please also see our video and photo policy.

Donations

We need your money to help make the magic happen! Please click here to go to our donations page to support our event! We need money for permitting fees, rentals, materials costs, multiple web domains for our different affiliated rides + privacy registration fees. We also need money for promotion expenses (flying, printing and advertising). Our organizers would also appreciate money for software updates which are very costly (Adobe Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks; Apple Final Cut Pro, iMovie; Hype and other programs). We also have a separate legal fund account, which has not been active since 2010.
