The Upcoming Calendar of Seasonal San Francisco World Naked Bike Rides presents the funnest opportunity to ProTest to Save Our Planet — in #ThePureSuitOfHappiness ( #BareAsYouDare ). As the San Francisco Chronicle “covered” us in 2024 & noted: “Nudism is Freedom!”

Bring your bikes to Ferry Building near Market Street & the Embarcadero Blvd. We meet northwest of the Ferry Building, between the Farmer's Market and the Starbucks west of the Ferry Building. We begin gathering at 11:00 AM in the open area along the pier. Please gather as close to the railing and avoid blocking pedestrian traffic on the Embarcadero and also those exiting the Ferry Building. We will have time to do body/face paint and reacquaint ourselves. Bring body paints, watercolors and markers to apply slogans and designs to each other and adorn your bikes with signs. Meet with old and new friends..

*This WNBR is a special celebration of Earth Day, a tribute to the birth of John Muir and an anniversary of the BP Macondo Well explosion and the massive oil spill in the Gulf Of Mexico that resulted on April 20, 2010..

*While it is a "naked" bike ride, all are welcome. It's ride as bare as you dare. That is, body paint, rubber latex, bikinis, topless, lingerie, bubble pack, whatever costume you are comfortable riding with. And we have already had over a dozen WNBRs while under cloud of the city anti-nudity ordinance, with NO citations or complaints. However, than its best to have a sarong, a beach wrap or shorts ready for quick coverup..

*Our ride is part of a global protest taking place today in many cities throughout the US, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and other cities in the Southern Hemisphere. Tens of thousands of naked bike riders are protesting the global dependency of our society and economies at the hands of the oil cartels. We want to emphasize the harm this dependency causes to our environment, businesses and social lives. Nobody is unaffected. We want to endorse more bike riding and our nudity expresses our vulnerability to these matters. It also draws attention to our cause..

*Along with commemorating Earth Day, this WNBR will focus on our continued world wide protest of the domination and dependency of big oil, our need for continued renewable energy and technological advances to better our planet. And now more than ever, to protest the Trump Administration whose very goals are to benefit big oil, clean coal(?) and put the environment at greater risk than ever..

*Our route will take us through many popular spots in the city such as Fisherman's Wharf, the Marina, Union Street, North Beach, along Embarcadero, the Civic Center, and the Castro. You say you can't make it to the start on time? Don't worry, it's a "Do It Yourself" ride. Join us anytime you find us along the route and feel free to leave when you must. It's great fun and an event you shouldn't miss. Tell all your bike, tech savvy and environmentally concerned friends to join us. It's ride as bare as you dare for the 8th Annual Earth Day World Naked Bike Ride - San Francisco 2018..

== NOTE: We no longer meet behind the Fountain in the formerly named Justin Herman Plaza ==

Since 2015, we decided to meet in the open public area on Embarcadero Blvd. by the Ferry Building. The area is the elevated portion with seats to the north of and between the Farmer's Market and the Starbuck's. Please stay back towards the motorcycle parking area and try to keep the main portion of the sidewalk unobstructed to regular pedestrian traffic. It is a long stretch of extra wide sidewalk space we should try to stay within. Please try to remain covered to a reasonable extent until enough people have gathered and word is given to undress, and if applying body slogans and paint, do so towards the rear of the area along the bay away from the foot traffic on Embarcadero.

*We would like to have a possible After Ride Party. Our ride ends in the Castro and there are a number of places to get food and drink in groups.

We will gather after the ride for a late lunch or drinks. We try to find a bar friendly to a number of near naked patrons, Alcohol rules require some form of cover-up, so have your cock socks and sarongs ready. Suggested businesses to patronize: Hot Cookie on Castro, Starbuck's on 18th, Bisou on Market, Wine Bar on Castro.

*Body Paint Face Paint Slogans We are always seeking the assistance of local and national artists for body painting, face painting and slogans. Don't want to ride, but want to do some cool paint, you're welcome to help us out at the start. Riders are also encouraged to please bring markers and water paints to do slogans and graphics on each other, a fun way to make new friends. Meet along side the motorcycle parking area on Embarcadero between the Farmer's Market and Starbucks. See the map to the new meeting location.

Schedule
*11:00 AM: Gather. The earlier time allows us to take advantage of the midday warmth. Turn sheets & maps distributed and going over route details. Bike checkout & attaching signs / body painting & slogans. Undress. Apply sunscreen. Group photo, then we go.

*just  after Noon: Ride starts (approx) usually between 12:15pm to 12:30pm. Depending on the mood of the group and the amount of media coverage we are getting the ride start always varies a bit after noon.

*about 4 hours after it starts (approx): Main ride finishes. Riders are free to leave the mass at anytime, as it is a DIY (do it yourself) ride, but why miss out on the fun?

Route
Route
<!---->

<!---->
Our route has been generated from years of experience riding to the more interesting parts of the city.  If there is a ballgame, we always go past AT&T Park. If it is unusually warm, we try to go out to Ocean Beach. We always do a stretch along the Embarcadero and through Fisherman's Wharf. We like the Marina and central portions like North Beach and Polk Street. The Mission and Haight are interesting and of course, the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream stop is a crowd favorite. While everyone favors flat, SF has hills, and it is unavoidable to do some climbing. Walk your bike if it isn't geared for hills. The ride leaves nobody behind.
+
The routes vary and will typically include iconic sections of the San Francisco such as the Embarcadero, the Civic Center, the Haight/Ashbury, the Panhandle, and the Castro.
 +

 +
When riding to the Haight or the Panhandle, we usually follow The Wiggle, which minimizes the grade of the inclines.
 +

 +
When riding to Market St from the Haight, we usually ride a few blocks downhill on Haight St, with a maximum downhill grade of 5%.

The route is being generated The ride will focus on the usual favorite spots. Route will be posted night before the ride on the Facebook Event Page and also on our Facebook Fan Page.
+
As weather & winds permit, when rolling across The Golden Gate Bridge, WNBRists MUST stay in Single File since the bike/ped path is very narrow & their is constant bike/ped traffic moving in both directions. No one wants to be stranded on GiGi Bridge, miles away from any immediate assistance or alternate transit options.

Ride Pace and Difficulty
Ride Pace and Difficulty
The ride is at a slow to moderate pace with frequent stops with the intention of maximum visibility to the motoring public, chant protest slogans and allow the public to take photos. We try to stay on level ground but San Francisco is a hilly place, so some hills are to be expected.  If the route takes us up the rare steep hill we walk so no one is left behind.
+
Just try to stay on the right shoulder in designated bike lanes or in the right lane. With enough riders, we will take up the right lane the whole way. Cars will be passing us. Most cars go slow, as drivers and passengers like getting pictures, but many may not respect all road users.
 +

 +
Always annunciate your approach "rider on your left" and use your bell if equipped. If you find yourself falling behind, call out to the riders in front to hold up.

Weather
Weather
March weather can be unseasonably warm and at times downright hot. Some years, our March ride has been warmer than the main June ride. Already in the middle of February in 2018, the Bay Area and the city had been seeing temperatures in the mid 70's and low 80's. In 2010, the June ride took place in near 100 degree temperatures and was the warmest ride we ever had. Always make sure you bring along enough water.

Getting there
Getting there
If you live out of town, please try to use public transportation to get to the start of the ride. Parking in the area is limited and expensive. Both BART and CalTrain take bicycles. If you do drive, try to carpool. There is a fair number of parking on the southern area of Market near the ride's meeting spot / final destination at  the Ferry Building. It takes about 10-15 minutes to ride your bike from 4th & King to the Ferry Building. Check out these websites for details:
+
You can ride your bike to Rincon ‘Cupid’s Arrow” Park from anywhere in the city or hitch your bike to the front of local MUNI buses ( bicycles are not permitted on MUNI Rail Trains ). From around the Bay Area, you can ride from nearby BART or CalTrain stations or put your bike on the front regional buses to the San Francisco TransBay Transit Center which is a few blocks from the Embarcadero; several San Francisco Bay Ferries are also a convenient bike-friendly & inexpensive way to avoid traffic hassles & disembark right on the Embarcadero. If you drive, parking near the finish in the Castro is recommended. There will usually be some WNBRists pedaling back to the Embarcadero along Market St from the Castro after the Ride; listen for announcements. Check for meters and time limits. There is parking enforcement on Saturdays.

Bikes
Bikes
<!---->

<!---->
Use your own bikes, borrow one or rent one from any of several bike rentals in the city such as Blazing Saddles. Google San Francisco bike rentals to find a place near our start, finish or your parking spot.
+
Your bike is in good shape if you ride frequently, but it’s prudent to check your tires, brakes and shifters. Do your maintenance & tuning before the ride, not during it. Our Friends/Supporters at @MarketStreetCycles, 1592 Market St, San Francisco, CA 94102 — one of many Naked WNBRist #NudistWelcomingMerchants — are conveniently located near downtown & happy to give exceptional thorough service to You bicycle if You give them a call in advance to set up an appointment: (415) 255-2453, MarketStreetCycles.com.

Please maintain your bikes. Check them and perform needed service BEFORE the ride. Have spare tubes, air pumps, medical kits and ample water. Not everyone needs complete service and medical kits as these can be shared. We ride by the philosophy "no rider left behind", but if your bike suffers a malfunction and can't be repaired in a reasonably short time, someone usually will help them back to their starting point, but the ride will go on.

Being California, everyone does things differently. We want to offer the broadest possible welcome. First of all, obey all the Laws of Comfort! There's no nudity requirement. Whether you come clothed in a full-length Fun-Fur or just a top hat, come as bare as you dare. Most riders carry some minimal clothing to wear when arriving and departing the group. One bike rental place offered 50% discounts to WNBR riders last year. See the FAQ for more info.

Secondly, skaters are welcome. Some skaters have joined us repeatedly! Since skaters tend to expend about 2x as much energy, and tend to roll 50% slower than bikers, skaters may wish to follow an abbreviated but comparable route by linking the level grades in the beginning and ending segments of the ride. One very accomplished naked skater in the 2010 SF WNBR skated up and down the steepest part of Lombard Street, The Crookedest Street in the World, to everyone's amazement.

April 2015 Citation Notice: Prior to the 2015 Earth Day ride, one rider received a citation before our gathering behind the fountain. However, he was the only one there and only had frontal regions covered. Please do not arrive undressed or get undressed at the start, especially if nobody else is there yet. It is best to wait until a significant amount of riders are present and our departure time is near. OH, AND THE GOOD NEWS FOR THAT ONE RIDER IS THE CITATION WAS DISMISSED; YOU MIGHT NOT BE SO LUCKY. Please remain dressed until just shortly before the ride starts.
+
Social Public Nudism in San Francisco USA
Liberal San Francisco is not so liberal anymore with the passage of an anti-nudity ordinance that went into effect on February 1st, 2013. Our four WNBR rides last year were a test to see how far we can push the limits. If this year is going to operate under the same leniency, there is no problem anticipated. It is apparent the city officials have studied the matter sufficiently to not desire a legal battle with the First Amendment protection our protests afford.
+
Rest assured, WNBRists have First Amendment protection, but always be prepared to cover up — if asked ( it will never happen if you are part of a group, but if caught alone, err on the side of not causing a fuss ). The SFPD have historically been hands off, when not deferential to WNBRists, & have offered to escort us if the ride numbers get larger. No Court in the Nation ever prosecutes anybody for simple Naturism or Nudism; the same goes for the San Francisco District Attorney & SF Superior Court Judge who have far more serious matters to occupy their super busy Court Calendars.

If you go naked, have a protest message to go with the nudity in the form of body painted slogans or signs. Be prepared to cover up. So far, the authorities have been nice in giving people an opportunity to cover up before giving out citations. Bare breasts are okay. To be legal, you just need to barely cover your private parts. Going naked outside the main group will definitely get you cited. There's more safety in numbers.
+

Bay To Breakers citations! A few nude runners/walkers during the recent 2014 Bay To Breakers were told to cover up, in spite of the so-called written exemptions written into the "Weiner Law" for this event and others like the Folsom Fair that have had a longstanding tradition of nudity. A few nudist activists were given citations. It looks as if a number of SFPD are being told to do an "end run" around the ordinance. If anyone encounters any officers doing "their job" and directing you to cover, please take down their badge numbers and names. You typically have a 5 minute time interval to cover without getting a citation. We have in the past had a good relationship with the SFPD. If confronted, be polite and non-confrontational, try to defuse, not escalate the situation. One person being an ass or a dick (pun intended) can put the remainder of the ride at risk.

Inform yourself of the local nudity laws before you bare all in case you have to explain yourself. This (~100 Kbs) (now out of date) contains the actual codes and regulations (with references) regarding nudity. Always treat the authorities with courtesy and respect and dress when ordered to do so. (If you need help interpreting the codes, please seek the advice of a lawyer.)

The WNBR Basics

 • 11:00 AM: Gathering. Rincon Park, Folsom & The Embarcadero Blvd near the “Cupid’s Arrow’ Sculpture ( The 2002 Cupid’s Span ). Ride begins promptly at 12pm/Noon.

If you need to rent a bike or scooter, there are sevearl options at and around the nearby Ferry Building.

Route

The routes vary and will typically include iconic sections of the San Francisco such as the Embarcadero, the Civic Center, the Haight/Ashbury, the Panhandle, and the Castro.

When riding to the Haight or the Panhandle, we usually follow The Wiggle, which minimizes the grade of the inclines.

When riding to Market St from the Haight, we usually ride a few blocks downhill on Haight St, with a maximum downhill grade of 5%.

Just try to stay on the right shoulder in designated bike lanes or in the right lane. With enough riders, we will take up the right lane the whole way. Cars will be passing us. Most cars go slow, as drivers and passengers like getting pictures, but many may not respect all road users.

Always annunciate your approach "rider on your left" and use your bell if equipped. If you find yourself falling behind, call out to the riders in front to hold up.

Weather

Getting there

Bikes

Your bike is in good shape if you ride frequently, but it’s prudent to check your tires, brakes and shifters. Do your maintenance & tuning before the ride, not during it. Our Friends/Supporters at @MarketStreetCycles, 1592 Market St, San Francisco, CA 94102 — one of many Naked WNBRist #NudistWelcomingMerchants — are conveniently located near downtown & happy to give exceptional thorough service to You bicycle if You give them a call in advance to set up an appointment: (415) 255-2453, MarketStreetCycles.com.
