The venue for body painting and the ride route will be kept secret (as last year) and will be revealed as the ride is in progress. Likewise for the post ride party.

Prizes!

The prizes are three bikes in excellent condition donated by Critical Mass Newcastle.

Prize 1: Encouraging Participation! A bike will be given to the contestant who recruits the highest number of participants to join and complete the ride with the contestant.

Prize 2: Encouraging Female Participation! A bike will be given to the female contestant who recruits the highest number of female participants to join and complete the ride with the contestant.

Prize 3: Best Individual Body Paint! A bike will be given to the rider who completes the ride and who is judged to be best decorated with body paint by the most acclaim of participants who complete the ride.

Flyer and poster

Whether you want to win the prize for recruiting or not, all potential participants are encouraged to download the flyer and poster to help promote participation in WNBR Nudecastle 2006. The more the merrier and everyone is welcome. Numbers amplify our protest message.

Pre-ride events

Critical Mass

Critical Mass Newcastle and the World Naked Bike Ride endorse and participate in all events held under both names in Newcastle. Critical Mass ride on the first Friday of every month. The next Critical Mass ride is on Friday 3 March 2006 and starts from Civic Park, opposite Newcastle Town Hall at 6pm.

Orientation barbecue and body painting party

Saturday 4 March 2006, 12 noon, Lass O'Gowrie, 14 Railway Street, Wickham 2293, NSW

This is a pub with a good-sized outdoor beer garden that offers privacy from the street and barbecue facilities. Drinking, team-building exercises and mandatory introductions will be included as well as a practice body-painting session (in your swimmers). Ian the publican does not want us to strip off completely because of licensing requirements. For a map of how to get there, please visit the Lass O'Gowrie website.

Feeling at ease

This icebreaker social event is intended to help inform potential participants of what they can expect during the WNBR Nudecastle 2006 and to make friends with everyone who intends to ride. Riding in any WNBR is daunting for the first time and worse if you turn up alone and don't know anyone. Participants should offer each other support and female participants should make an extra effort to bond with their sisters. Any woman that wants to volunteer for the role of Women’s Support Woman is welcome. All participants are encouraged to welcome and engage with everyone who turns up at the beginning of the ride whether they have attended the Orientation BBQ or not. Introduce yourself by your given name or nickname and make others feel welcome and comfortable. Body painting in preparation for the ride can be done in segregated groups and without any media present.

Media

Media enquiries for Australia: please contact Marte Kinder. Several freelance professional media people will attend the WNBR Nudecastle 2006. At the moment, two photographers and a video producer have shown some interest or decided to attend. One of the photographers and the video producer attended the 2005 event and have been vetted by the organisers. The manner in which these people conducted themselves in 2005 was impeccable and they portrayed the participants respectfully. The second photographer has approached the organisers and is expected to attend the Orientation BBQ along with the other media people. The Orientation Barbecue is not a media event. The actual WNBR Nudecastle 2006 will be photographed and filmed by our vetted media (apart from the undressing and painting) so take warning beforehand. If it makes you feel more at ease, consider that you may be able to heavily disguise yourself with body paint and sunglasses etc. The organisers do not anticipate uninvited photographers and video operators will be able to find us so will not shoot us either. The still photographs taken by the photographers are generally available to be viewed in low definition format within a couple of weeks on the WNBR Newcastle Yahoo! group and ready for distribution to the press in print-quality format within hours of the ride completion. The photos are copyright, so permission of the photographer must be sought before they can be reproduced or otherwise used.

Video Night

A video of cycling activists in Newcastle featuring Critical Mass and the WNBR Nudecastle 2005 will be shown by the video producer who shot the WNBR Nudecastle 2005. He supplied the following invitation:

A broadcast of a special edition of the Novocast program Lou's World* on Newcastle Community Television will take place at the Royal Exchange, Bolton Street, Newcastle (Next to Herald building), on Monday 20 February 2006 at 9.30pm.
The documentary on Cycle Activists will feature Critical Mass, The White Bicycle Project, (some body painting) and The World Naked Bike.

(Jeees $850 for an aerial!! In the black and white days we just used a coat hanger!!)
RSVP
(Program contains nudity) This is a media event and you will be photographed. (* Lou's World is not connected with this episode)

University support

A stall was set up at University of Newcastle during orientation week (13-17 February), promoting Critical Mass and the World Naked Bike Ride. Many students took an interest in WNBR and the theme of promoting peace and protecting the environment. The organisers were helped during O Week by the Newcastle University Students Association (NUSA), the NUSA Environment Collective, Rising Tide and the University Union. Big thanks to everyone at the Univeristy from WNBR.
