Ride Details
The southern hemisphere ride date traditionally falls on the second Saturday in March each year. In 2011 this is Saturday the 12th of March. No ride is planned for 2011 (see planning below).
If an official ride does not go ahead in Brisbane in 2011, please consider going to Nimbin and/or Byron Bay rides. Nimbin and Byron Bay are within commuting distance of Brisbane. Practice has been to have these rides staggered to allow keen participants to ride in both these places. If a Brisbane ride does happen it may be possible to ride in all 3 places over consecutive weekends.
Planning
The role of Organiser in Brisbane is currently vacant. Until a new Organiser is found, there is no prospect for a future ride in Brisbane. If you are keen to see a ride happen in Brisbane you need to volunteer as an Organiser. Please refer to the Organizing a ride in Australia page to volunteer.
People interested in participating or helping the 2010 WNBR in Brisbane should join the discussion group and post a message saying what they have in mind to help.
Do you have a suggestion for an place to assemble or route for the next WNBR in Brisbane? If you have ideas join the discussion group and post a message. Please refer to the Organizing a ride in Australia page for more information about starting or restarting a ride.
Confusing information
There have been a number of personalities who have volunteered to organise a WNBR in Brisbane over the years since 2004.
Tim / Andre
There was a person went by the name of Tim who also went by the name Andre who used the following email addresses: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] . Through an email to one of the WNBR Yahoo! groups, Tim passed the message that Tweed Heads held a WNBR in 2004. No one else has verified the information and no photos of the alleged ride exist. Tim was involved with WNBR Brisbane through a Yahoo! group he set up for WNBR Brisbane and his appointment as an Organiser was without apparent support from any peers. He may well have been self appointed or appointed on the alleged authority of an overseas WNBR person. In any case Tim/Andre tried on his own to organise rides in 2005 and 2006, publicised only through the Yahoo! group that saw a confused handful of people turn up to the assembly place who later complained that they did not find Tim/Andre. Disappointed riders and press stood around looking at each other for a while before they all went home. No one knows what Tim/Andre looks like. In late 2006, Tim/Andre announced that he was leaving Brisbane to reside a long way away. Tim/Andre was asked by the Australian Coordinator to transfer the Yahoo! group he had set up to the Australian Coordinator for continuity and for the purpose of handing moderator functions to a new Organiser, should one be found. Tim/ Andre was very possessive and reluctant to help and he reasoned that he should find and select a replacement for himself as he was qualified by virtue of being from Brisbane (even if he was no longer living in Brisbane). Eventually, Tim/Andre was convinced to hand over the Yahoo! group he had established on the condition that ownership was transferred to Dario Western who resides in Brisbane. The whole process was very compromised and unreasonable with the outcome dictated by Tim/Andre.
Dario Western
Dario took over the Yahoo! group for WNBR Brisbane in December 2006. Dario held the ownership of the Yahoo! group for WNBR Brisbane to himself and rejected requests to share that ownership with the Australian Coordinator for the preservation of continuity and future transitions. Although Dario was the Orgnaniser in name, Lily Barlow and Laura Kearns (two models) did most of the work to organise a successful WNBR in Brisbane 2007 with 32 riders attending. Lily Barlow and Laura Kearns departed after the Brisbane 2007 and lost contact with the WNBR Australia organisation not that they had much if any contact via email while they were involved.
In July 2007, Dario breached the terms of service of his Yahoo! email account and Yahoo! administrators cancelled his email account. This left the Yahoo! group for WNBR Brisbane without an owner and beyond the control of any remaining members. It was irredeemable and useless so the WNBR Australian Coordinator set up the new WNBR Brisbane Yahoo! group that exists and functions to this day. Yahoo! administrators were convinced to kill the old zombie group.
In Brisbane 2008 Dario (without the help of Lily Barlow and Laura Kearns) attempted to organise a ride which attracted only a handful of participants. Dario refused to participate in the ride as a protest against the small turnout and the lack of female participants.
In December 2008, at the WNBR Australia National Convention, Dario agreed with the collective position of Australian Organisers that his ability to perform the role and achieve a satisfactory level of rider participation was in serious need of improvement and that the future of WNBR in Brisbane and his position of Organiser were dependant on demonstrated improvement. Reasons for the lack of attendance at the Brisbane 2008 WNBR were seen to be lack of publicity beyond circulating the ride details via the Yahoo! group, facebook group and myspace, failure to attract and retain willing helpers and other ride requirements.
In Brisbane 2009 the ride attracted a handful of riders and by his own assessment, Dario stated, it was not a satisfactory level of participation. Brisbane had set a record for having the 2 smallest rides in Australia for a second or subsequent event in any city or town. Despite the undertaking to improve or step aside in the circumstances, Dario had difficulty understanding and accepting that it was not in the best interests of the event for him to continue. Dario had the opportunity to announce his retirement which he rejected. The position of WNBR Brisbane Organiser was announced as vacant as of 7 Apr 2009. Dario is maintaining control of a facebook group and a MySpace page using the WNBR Brisbane name and insisting he has the right to call himself the WNBR Brisbane Organiser despite having no endorsement or support locally or nationally among his former peers. Dario threatened to organise a ride in 2010 regardless of whether it was approved by WNBR Australia. A call out for a new volunteer Brisbane Organiser was made by WNBR Australia which was answered via email by a person calling themselves John Westnidge who turned out to be Dario applying for his former position under an assumed name. If this is his typical behaviour he may have also been assuming the identity of Tim/Andre.
Over time, Dario has made a number of discriminatory remarks about societal groups and failed to demonstrate an understanding of the WNBR protest message, instead emphasising the mistaken belief that the protest aims were to promote public nudity drawing the ire of members of the community and QLD Police attention. He is unable to distinguish between non-sexual nudity (such as true naturism) and erotic material that sexualises and objectifies the human form. He has advertised the ride via forums of Men's magazines.
Dario continues to make embarassing failed attempts to organise an unofficial WNBR in Brisbane:
