June 9th again?
Why is June 9th suggested again for the WNBR 2007 ride date? The 2007 ride dates page does not give any reason for this decision whatsoever. Is it only because London has decided to go forward first with that date? Why hold ourselves back from chosing a warm date? The only reason I can think of for doing it in June is that there are fewer conflicts with more Summer events, and Spain doesn't want to do it between late June and September because school is out. But I think those are weak reasons for the rest of us.

A lot of us in the Pacific Northwest and around the world think June, especially early June, is too cold and unpredictable weather wise to organize annual naked bike ride events. Seattle made the mistake of going along with 10 June 2006 for our 3rd ride because London was pushing for it in 2005. We got rained out in 2005 and we had to cancel the second half of our event. Our riders had a good time and were very brave to face the wind and rain, but they made it very clear they did not want to ride again in early June. We will not make the same mistake of following a bad example weather-wise again. We know we are not at all alone on this. Seattle votes for warm months.
Seattle, as an example, has our bodypainting event outside, not in a protected indoor venue. We are getting sick of shivering outside for 3-4 hours while we are getting painted before the ride. Secondly, we enjoy going to the Seattle Center Fountain, but this year it was just too cold to really get into it and you could totally tell. We also like to invade public beaches and go wading in. Very few of us felt it was warm enough for this in early June.
We are pursuing a July date, regardless of what a small minority of cities want. Thanks for your consideration. D 21:22, 4 Jul 2006 (PDT) Seattle WNBR team
Is solidarity dependent on doing the same thing on the same day?
I'm not really convinced that having WNBR on the same day really benefits many cities in a huge way, except perhaps the smaller start-up cities that can say, "well, its a global event you know and we are just doing our part." One can ride in solidarity on shared principles and goals without regard to time and date I think. That being said, I still think if we moved the ride date to July or August we could have more people participate in the Northern hemisphere.
Many of the larger rides seem like standalone events. Whether the rides happen in what day in June or July doesn't seem to matter. I think what does matter more is are the riders having a good time, are locals supportive of the ride, and is the message of WNBR getting out. I think that should be the bottom line. - I think it's very important that the rides take place on the same day. It gives the event a truly worldwide feel. After all it the World Naked Bike Ride! --Nsayers 02:30, 6 Jul 2006 (PDT)
- Well, I guess maybe we could get rid of those pesky Southern Hemisphere people to start off with, after all, they joined the movement late, and who needs a Burning Man event anyway, don't they all ride around naked anyway?
- If we had a winning date to begin with that worked for everybody that would be one thing, but we don't. Some keep picking June, for no reason that they are bothering themselves to identify. D 17:00, 6 Jul 2006 (PDT)
- Heh. Don't get me wrong: I think it's great (and entirely logical) that there's a separate Southern Hemisphere date. We're even thinking of doing a solidarity ride next March in England. It also makes sense for individual locations (eg: Burning Man) to choose a different date if the set one's not convenient. I just think having two set dates a year helps keep the event international. Of course, why it has to be Saturdays in March and June is another question. It might be better for media coverage if it was on a Sunday, and warmer in England if it was in July/August. However, we've started advertising 9 June 2007 now, so perhaps we should stick with it... --Nsayers 00:20, 7 Jul 2006 (PDT)
Nude Recreation Week
July 9-15, 2007 is Nude Recreation Week in North America, and yet there are no known large-scale public events during that time. WNBR could easily fit this bill.
