RIDE REPORT: The first ever Sheffield ride had 27 participants on Sunday 8 June 2008. The response was generally positive (just one heckler called out during the ride). Happily, both the park authorities and Police were OK with the ride. It was a great and surreal experience. A number of the ride participants now plan to work together to make Sheffield WNBR 2008 a success (with hopefully 2 or 3 times the number of riders).

2009

RIDE REPORT: 2009: Saturday 13th June 10am-3pm (18 naked riders) 2 ladies

The second Sheffield ride had 18 participants on Saturday 13th June 2009. The ride brought cheer and smiles to bystanders as we passed by, with no reported hecklers. Furthermore, the park authorities seemed quite supportive in their lack of intervention.

We met at 10am inside the gates of Endcliffe Park under the gaze of the Queen Victoria statue, which serves as an eye-catching landmark for folk to gather beneath. After an hour of sunbathing and chatting, whilst awaiting later arrivals, we set off at 11:05am. The ride took about an hour and ten minutes and we therefore cycled back into Endcliffe Park at about 12:15pm.

There were 18 naked riders which was down from last year's 27 participants, although the weather was just as nice and sunny with a warm gentle breeze. The golden sunshine and clear blue skies, made it a wonderful day for everbody. This year, as it was our second annual ride, we were hoping for around one hundred naked riders. However, as the London WNBR was held in the afternoon, this may have lowered the turn out as folk thronged to the London ride which had over one thousand riders. On the upside, there were two naked ladies who took part in the ride, which was better than last year as there were none at all. A third lady, accompanying her naked brother, chose to ride fully clothed.

The only unfortunate incident was when a very unhappy police officer stopped the ride on Arundel Gate as we attempted to turn left on to Norfolk Street and ride up into the city centre. We were held up for several minutes whilst ride organiser Nick Oodian explained the purpose of the ride and gave him the police reference for our political protest. The police officer seemed none too happy that we had been previously authorised and redirected us away from the pre-planned city centre route. This inconvenience caused us to miss the onlook of the high density pedestrian areas around the Town Hall and Peace Gardens. Full marks go to Nick for his diplomatic skills in placating the irate officer and allowing the ride to continue, albeit on an alternative route. The police officer returned to his police car, and we rode away continuing down Arundel Gate.

Back at Endcliffe Park a professional photographer was present and courteously asked folk for their permission to photograph them naked with their bicycles and he also undertook audio recorded interviews with some of the riders. Max Pratt suggested to the photographer that a group photo of everyone would be a good idea, at this suggestion the photographer asked Nick Oodian about it, whereupon everybody gathered in a line with the trees as the backdrop. With out doubt a great day was had by everybody!

Nick, David, Max, and Andy have formed a working group to start planning for next year's ride in June 2010.

Register your interest

The first World Naked Bike Ride is going to happen on Sunday 8 June 2008. We're just getting this wikipage set up with info, so if you have questions or want to simply register your interest in participating in the ride, visit World Naked Bike Ride and register your interest. Full info and updates about the ride will appear at the Facebook pages.

About the ride

A peaceful, imaginative and fun protest against oil dependency and car culture. A celebration of the bicycle and also a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body. A symbol of the vulnerability of the cyclist in traffic. The world's biggest naked protest: 50+ cities and thousands of riders participate worldwide, including more than 1500 in the UK in 2007

Be prepared

First off, check your bike is in good working order. Bring something to safely carry your clothes in (panniers, rucksack, etc). Finally, be sure to decorate your bike and body with slogans, and bring bells and whistles! If you don't feel ready to strip off at the ride start, that's ok, you can strip some off later if you wish.

Route

The first Sheffield World Naked Bike Ride will start in Endcliffe Park at the Victoria Monument (map). We can disrobe in and around the gate entrance to the park.

NOTES: Try and avoid gathering near the Endcliffe Park Cafe as this is a family cafe.

  1. The ride starts by going down Ecclesall Road to the roundabout at Waitrose.
  2. Right onto St Marys Gate (NB: if numbers are low we can take the underpass & cycleway for this bit).
  3. If we take the underpass, we could stop so that people who were too nervous at Endcliffe could disrobe further (Brighton had a similar stop - this worked well).
  4. Left at next roundabout onto Eyre Street.
  5. Straight on at roundabout at furnival square onto Arundel Gate
  6. NOW THE FUN STARTS AGAIN
  7. Left onto Norfolk Street past the Crucible.
  8. Right onto Surrey Street
  9. Left onto Pinstone St - past town Hall & peace gardens
  10. Right onto Furnival Gate
  11. Left onto Charter Row then Moore Street
  12. Straight on back onto Eccesall Road to Endcliffe Park

(Many thanks to David for planning this route.)

Bike hire

Bikes can be hired from several places in Sheffield, but we'll try to list some recommended hire locations shortly.

Meetings and events

The ride planning for the two first rides took place on the WNBR UK Yahoo! group.:

After the second ride however, a dedicated WNBR_Sheffield Yahoo! Group was created by Max Pratt on the Sunday morning after the ride, 14th June 2009. However, the dormant wnbr-sheffield group had been earlier registered by Jesse with him as the sole member and with a blank homepage. Jesse explained that he registered the group name domain, but decided not to promote the group until he found a suitable moderator. At the first planning meeting on Monday 22nd June 2009, it was decided by Andy, David, and Max to shut down the new WNBR_Sheffield group with 26 members and to move over to wnbr-sheffield instead. Jesse made Max a moderator and Max in turn made David and Andy moderators too. Please join us at wnbr-sheffield.

The next Monday evening's planning meeting has been agreed to be at The Fat Cat public house.

Everybody is welcome, so please come and join in, The more of us who take part in the collective, the bigger our ride will grow in the future. We hope to work towards having over one hundred naked riders thronging Sheffield's streets in next June's 2010 event.

Publicity

The Sheffield ride publicity materials will be provided here for download and distribution.

Poster

For the 2009 ride, some A4 posters have been printed. If more are needed, a PDF file can be downloaded from

for printing locally.

Planning group

The first ride is being planned without formal planning meetings but it is likely that a Sheffield Ride Planning Collective will emerge to plan the next ride (2009). Following the York, London, Cardiff, and Brighton rides style of organisation, we expect Sheffield will be organising through open planning meetings where decisions will be taken collectively. As an interim measure a few riders will act as sole organisers until there are enough people involved to arrange meetings.

That said, we have a ride coordinator who will facilitate the ride planning process whether or not there is a planning collective.

Here's what the coordinator normally does:

  • answers people's questions with care and consideration
  • keeps track of who is doing what, and how far through things people are
  • deals with problems and follow the discussions at the national level
  • provides email updates to let people know what's going on
  • points out where and when help is needed
  • acts as a contact point for general enquiries (email and sometimes mobile phone)
  • maintains contact information (and keeps it secure)

Additional responsibilities that the coordinator choose to take on:

  • arrange meetings, compile agendas, provide minutes
  • ensure that the collective remains non-hierarchical but organised
  • moderate an email list for Sheffield ride planning
