'''VERY NEAR NOW - PRE-RIDE PARTICIPANT ADVICE'''

The World Naked Bike Ride is a global protest movement with rides in cities around the world, raising awareness of issues such as safety of cyclists on the road, reducing oil dependency and saving the planet. Let's make the planet great again!

WNBR's themes are to:
- protest against the global dependency on oil
- curb car culture
- obtain real rights for cyclists
- demonstrate the vulnerability of cyclists on city streets
- celebrate body freedom

As well as promoting healthy life choices it can also be the best fun you can ever have on two wheels. The Brighton ride carries the City's reputation as an exciting multicultural centre, with big crowds in the famous shopping streets to cheer it on. It is fun, legal and all in a worthy cause.

Participants should note the following:

Covid 19 provisions
Ideally you should take a pre-ride Lateral Flow test or even better a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test. Lateral Flow tests are less accurate but give a rapid result, PCR tests take laboratory time. DO NOT RIDE if you are sufferning from ANY symptoms of illness.

The Naked Bike Ride takes place in the open air and cycle spacing will provide some protection against transmission of infection. If you so wish please feel at ease wearing a normal mask. Do not wear any large mask that might affect your ability to see to ride safely.

Please remember personal space when in the cordoned assembly area (compound) before the start at Preston Park and at any stop. Wear a mask if possible.

Bring hand gel.

Other Safety
You may be directed to park your bike in a specific area of the compound to avoid the congestion created by randomly deposited bikes that we have experienced previously, please seek to assist us by complying.

The ride will accept cycles, tandems and trikes - electrically assisted cycles are OK too. Electrically powered (motor)cycles, hoverboards and scooters are illegal and Police will be present and may confiscate such devices and charge users with an offence. Skaters and runners are discouraged.

Children (under 16) may accompany you on the ride but must remain clothed and be in the care of an adult parent or guardian at all times. They must be competent cyclists and wear adequate protective equipment.

Please ensure that your bike is roadworthy.

You should be sure to bring your preferred suncream and may wish to bring your own body paint if you are using it. In intense sunshine body paint can act as a UV filter, you may end up wearing your slogan (in negative letters!) for some time !!

Photography
No clothed non-participant photographers will be permitted in the compound. If you are willing to be photographed please let the entrance desk know as they may be able to make arrangements with photographers. If you leave the compound you may be photographed by anybody. Photographers will be present on the route, if any become a problem please challenge them, their activity may be rude and intrusive but is not illegal.

Hints and Tips
The World Naked Bike Ride is a protest, not an event. We do not require permission in the UK (yet) to hold this rally however we do, as a matter of courtesy, and for the safety of our participants, liaise with the Police, who, with our thanks, provide us with a number of officers as escort cycle riders and safety vehicles.

Riding naked is no more uncomfortable in the saddle than being clothed and may be better as there is no fabric to chafe. Some people utilise an additional fabric seat cover - depends on the padding of both seat and rider!

The motto of the ride is "as bare as you dare", complete nudity is permitted in law as long as there is no intention to cause harassment, alarm or distress. Footware of some sort is advised both for pedal and roadway comfort. You may wish to wear body painted slogans or have a flag attached to your bike. It is hoped that we will have body painters available to assist for whom a donation is appropriate.

Toilets are available in Preston Park and at Black Rock.

Take your clothes with you on the bike, in a waterproof bag in case of rain (wet clothes aren't funny), we do NOT return to the start, which is dismantled as soon as we leave it, so you will need them. Cycling naked in Brighton after the end of the ride is not advisable, you will no longer have the protection of fellow riders or the police. Please make sure that your cycle luggage is secure, huge bags and poor bungee cords have caused far too many problems in the past.

If you're going for a skinny-dip (it will be near high-tide) you may need a towel unless you're OK with drip-drying and as its a pebble beach for some sunbathing comfort.

We will be collecting donations at the assembly point and at the beach finish. You can also donate online via eventfbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brighton-naked-bike-ride-2021-tickets-164956668837. We need your support to fund the overhead costs of running the ride. This year we will be able to accept donations by contactless cards or phones as well as cash.

We ask for volunteer marshals, identified by orange caps, armbands or flags. Thier task is entirely to ensure your safety. Please comply with their requests. If you or your bike breaks down, please get dressed and make your way clothed, the ride cannot stop for you. The ride will finish at the Naturist beach, at Black Rock, the Marina end of Madeira Drive near the Volks Railway terminal.

Music systems and noise makers are welcome! We want to be noticed. See you (possibly all of you) there!!

Join us for a naked "protestival" ride through the City — followed by a refreshing sea swim and beachfront after-party!

Every year since 2006 (except 2020, due to Covid), Brighton has joined World Naked Bike Rides around the world to celebrate cycling and the human body. The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against car culture.

Brighton's World Naked Bike Ride will take place on Sunday 11 June 2023. Up to 1,000 riders have taken part in previous peak years. Full nudity is permitted at the event, in cooperation with Sussex Police.

The event is one of several UK and worldwide rides happening around the same time, including nearby London the day before. It is scheduled to allow people to take part in other rides.

The ride has in the past been part of national Bike Week.

Please join our email list for occasional updates on the ride and related events.

Planning meet-ups

Please come along if you'd like to get involved in any way or want to find out more, anyone is welcome. We meet at least once a month in the run-up to the ride, from January to June.

 • Organising pre-ride fundraising or after ride social events.
 • Marshalling during the ride: Helping to keep riders together and safe, and providing assistance if necessary.
 • Stewarding before the ride: Collecting donations, handing out flyers and dealing with intrusive photographers.
 • Bike mechanics to assist riders with bike repairs and maintenance before the ride and at the rest stop.
