Register your Interest

The first World Naked Bike Ride is going to happen on Sunday 8 June 2008. We're just getting this wikipage set up with info, so if you have questions or want to simply register your interest in participating in the ride, visit World Naked Bike Ride and register your interest. Full info and updates about the ride will appear at the Facebook pages.

About the WNBR

A peaceful, imaginative and fun protest against oil dependency and car culture. A celebration of the bicycle and also a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body. A symbol of the vulnerability of the cyclist in traffic. The world's biggest naked protest: 50+ cities and thousands of riders participate worldwide, including more than 1500 in the UK in 2007

Be prepared

First off, check your bike is in good working order. Bring something to safely carry your clothes in (panniers, rucksack, etc). Finally, be sure to decorate your bike and body with slogans, and bring bells and whistles! If you don't feel ready to strip off at the ride start, that's ok, you can strip some off later if you wish.

Route

The first Sheffield World Naked Bike Ride will start in Endcliffe Park at the Victoria Monument (map). We can disrobe in and around the gate entrance to the park.

NOTES: Try and avoid gathering near the Endcliffe Park Cafe as this is a family cafe.

1. The ride starts by going down Ecclesall Road to the roundabout at Waitrose.

2. Right onto St Marys Gate (NB: if numbers are low we can take the underpass & cycleway for this bit).

If we take the underpass, we could stop so that people who were too nervous at Endcliffe could disrobe further (Brighton had a similar stop - this worked well).

3. Left at next roundabout onto Eyre Street.

4. Straight on at roundabout at furnival square onto Arundel Gate

NOW THE FUN STARTS AGAIN

5. Left onto Norfolk Street past the Crucible.

6. Right onto Surrey Street

7. Left onto Pinstone St - past town Hall & peace gardens

8. Right onto Furnival Gate

9. Left onto Charter Row then Moore Street

10. Straight on back onto Eccesall Road to Endcliffe Park

(Many thanks to David for planning this route.)

Bike Hire

Bikes can be hired from several places in Sheffield, but we'll try to list some recommended hire locations shortly.

Meetings and Events

The ride planning currently takes place on the WNBR UK Yahoo! group. When there is sufficient interest, we'll probably put together a dedicated Sheffield WNBR list.

Publicity

The Sheffield ride publicity materials will be provided here for download and distribution.

Sheffield WNBR Planning Collective

The first ride is being planned without formal planning meetings but it is likely that a Sheffield Ride Planning Collective will emerge to plan the next ride (2009). Following the York, London, Cardiff, and Brighton rides style of organisation, we expect Sheffield will be organising through open planning meetings where decisions will be taken collectively. As an interim measure a few riders will act as sole organisers until there are enough people involved to arrange meetings.

That said, we have a ride coordinator who will facilitate the ride planning process whether or not there is a planning collective. Here's what the coordinator normally does:

  • answers people's questions with care and consideration
  • keeps track of who is doing what, and how far through things people are
  • deals with problems and follow the discussions at the national level
  • provides email updates to let people know what's going on
  • points out where and when help is needed
  • acts as a contact point for general enquiries (email and sometimes mobile phone)
  • maintains contact information (and keeps it secure)

Additional responsibilities that the coordinator choose to take on:

  • arrange meetings, compile agendas, provide minutes
  • ensure that the collective remains non-hierarchical but organised
  • moderate an email list for Sheffield ride planning

Media coverage

There is always plenty of TV and Radio coverage locally, plus some mention in national media. Here we will provide links to stories which are available on the internet, and apply specifically to Sheffield.
