160-200 cyclists (and one skateboarder) took part in Brighton & Hove's first ride, on a blazing hot day! A strategy needs to be established for overturning this ruling in 2007.

It passes the following landmarks (in route order): Royal Pavilion, Old Steine, Brighton Pier, Brighton & Hove seafront, West Pier, Peace Statue, King Alfred Leisure Centre, George Street, Hove Town Hall, Floral Clock, Western Road, Churchill Square, Clock Tower, the (south) Lanes, North Laine, Jubilee Library, Kemptown. The route is 6.9 miles long ([http://groups.yahoo.com/group/criticalmassbrighton/ Critical Mass Brighton] usually goes between 5 and 7 miles).

This route was tested on 22 April 2006 by Nick, Tamsin, Mike, Miriam, Mandi and Ian. This proved very productive, with many issues being brought up. The main effect on the route was to turn in to Church Road at Fourth Avenue rather than Seafield Road (too far into Hove, difficult traffic!).

It would be a good idea to make stops along the route in case people want to take off more clothes. The best potential places for this are: the [http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=529875&y=104163&z=2&ar=Y Peace Statue], the bottom of Fourth Avenue, Hove Town Hall and the [http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=529475&y=104615&z=2&ar=Y Floral Clock] (+ maybe New Road/Victoria Gardens?).

Thoughts:
*Is this route too long?
*Would it be better to avoid the Western Road bus lane?
*It misses West Street – is there a way to include this?

An alternative route also needs to be planned, in case of bad weather or small turn-out.

This page has information about the fourth year of London's participation in the World Naked Bike Ride. In 2004, there were 58 riders in Hyde Park, and in 2005 there were 250 riders in the central London streets. Last year an astonishing 800 riders shed clothes to protest against oil dependency. This June the ride will return to the streets of London allowing riders to see the many sights of this remarkable city from the comfort of their own bikes/skates.

===Route===
The ride features approximately 10k (6 miles) of central London with mostly left turns and a mix of high traffic and low traffic riding. There are no major hills and a park start and finish. The route will start at Hyde Park Corner, then take in Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Embankment, Parliament/Big Ben, Westminster Bridge, Aquarium/London Eye, IMAX cinema roundabout, Waterloo Bridge, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Charing Cross Road, Centre Point/Tottenham Court Road Tube, Oxford Street, Oxford Circus, Selfridges, US Embassy, Park Lane, and finish at Hyde Park Corner or Wellington Arch. Please note that this year's meeting point will be within Hyde Park itself, just north of the statue of Achilles (London's oldest nude statue!). This is just across the road from last year's meeting point at Wellington Arch.

If you're wondering why the route doesn't include Constitution Hill, Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Birdcage Walk, Horseguards Parade, the Metropolitan Police asked us not to use these routes because Trooping of the Colour has caused there to be various traffic restrictions on these streets on the day of the ride.

===Legality===
We have notified the police of our intention to ride in protest of oil dependency and in celebration of our bodies. They are fully aware that many/most of our riders will be nude and partially nude as we cycle a route through the streets of central London. In both 2005 and 2006 the police indicated that they would not be arresting us or trying to prevent the protest ride, and have assured us of similar support this year. We will try to ensure that the 2007 ride is endorsed by the police, as all previous London rides have been.

===Body Painting===
The best way to make sure you are ready for the ride is to get painted at home beforehand. Wear loose-fitting clothing that won't rub it off, and you can always leave final details and touch-ups for the ride. The advise on getting and using body paint, see the [[United_Kingdom_FAQ#Do_you_have_body_paint_information.3F_How_much_does_it_cost_to_cover_someone_with_body_paint.3F | UK FAQs]]. The easiest thing is to have a friend body-paint you, but you can paint yourself if it's an all-over-in-one-colour or message on your legs.

For people who aren't able to paint themselves at home, body painting - provided by Sitech Creations Ltd [http://www.sitecreations.co.uk] & others - will be available from 2.30pm at the assembly area. There are limited numbers of paints and painters, so access may be limited. Body Painting will happen under the trees just north of the Achilles statue. We've had good weather at each of the UK rides so far, indeed stunning hot sunshine in 2006. Does that mean statistically we're predicting rain? RAIN IS NOT PREDICTED, BUT.. the ride will not be cancelled in the event of rain. If it rains, bring some warm dry clothes to change into after the ride, and keep them dry. A large, thin plastic bag (such as you get from your dry cleaner) could be an effective protection if you want to seem naked in the rain. Maybe we can beat the Vancouver record for most naked riders in the rain! As with the 2006 ride, the London Bicycle Touring Company has agreed to do a discounted bike rental of £10 for the afternoon of the ride. On the day of the ride, you can collect your bike at any time after 1pm and return at any time before 7pm. This year, delivery is not available, and bikes must be collected from the shop. Although the shop normally closes at 6pm, they will allow us to return bikes until 7pm. This will allow you to finish the ride and spend some time catching up with old/new friends. The London ride intends to organise in an autonomous, decentralised, and self-organising manner. Anyone who is prepared to contribute to planning in this way is welcome to attend the meetings. The meeting agenda can include route/time, negotiations with police, improving the experience for new riders, presswork, and any other matters that people bring to the meeting. Meetings are open to non-London riders who wish to plan rides in their area. If any non-London riders attend, their rides can be discussed. Press are not welcome to the planning meeting.

The final WNBR London 2007 meeting will take place at 6:30pm on the evening of '''WEDNESDAY''' 30 May 2007. '''IMPORTANT NOTE: This meeting will not be at the British Museum, where meetings usually take place.''' ===On the day===
We need people to pass out leaflets at the assembly point and during the ride. If you plan to pass out leaflets on the ride, you need to have a good scheme for carrying the leaflets, so they don't spill out or blow away, but so you still can reach them to pass out. We're going to try to pass out leaflets to the crowd at the assembly point and then during the ride.

===Being a Volunteer Steward===
In order to ensure the smooth running of this year’s London World Naked Bike Ride, we are asking for volunteer stewards to look after the welfare of riders.

The purpose of WNBR stewards is to monitor the safety and wellbeing of riders and to provide advice and assistance where necessary. Stewards will be a visible presence amongst riders and will help to ensure that participants are safe, that they don't get lost or separated from the main ride and to provide assistance to those who get left behind or have breakdowns or punctures.

Stewards are NOT meant to police the ride - that is the job of the police - we just need people willing and able to look out for others and to lend a helping hand when required.

As a steward you will be required to:
*be a confident and proficient cyclist;
*be reasonable, responsible and approachable;
*arrive at the ride start point at 1.30pm for a ‘stewards briefing’;
*bring a small rucksack in which to put: a puncture repair kit, spare T-shirt, bottle of water & a bike pump (if you have any of these, it would be most appreciated if you could bring them along, if not, we will endeavour to provide them);
*carry a mobile phone (for use only in emergencies).

In return, you will receive:
*a FREE World Naked Bike Ride flag (RRP £2.50);
*a sign identifying you as a WNBR steward;
*support, assistance and guidance from the Stewards Co-ordinator;
*a warm glow knowing that you’ve helped to make the London WNBR 2007 a success!

As a steward, you are welcome to go "as bare as you dare" although you may want to consider not riding completely in the nude as this may affect your willingness/ability to assist others.

The London Ride has had a following photography/filming policy since 2005.

We welcome photography during the ride, but there are some restrictions.

*No photos are permitted BEFORE or AFTER the street ride EXCEPT with by explicit prior arrangement with the subject.
*During the street ride, no closeup photos of people are allowed without the person's consent.
*During the street ride, no photos of participants when they aren't riding/skating (except with the person's consent).
*Riders and supporters are actively encouraged to enforce these policies. Thank you!
[NOTE: The first line in this list had been "EXCEPT in a designated photo area (where consenting riders can go to be photographed)" but we aren't setting up a designated photo area this year 2007, so the policy is being ammended].

To ensure that this policy is clear to all present, it may appear on signs at the ride assembly area or on leaflets distributed at the event. We will also be creating a downloadable kit for constructing a "Photo Policy Enforcement Board". This A4 board has the photo policy info on one side and in large letters it says "''Please stop taking this photo. Your behaviour makes the person you are photographing uncomfortable. You are disrupting our event, and we ask you to leave now.''" If plenty of riders and stewards have these available, then they can put the board between an inconsiderate photographer and the unwilling subject. We'll see if this works. To make it happen, you'll need to download, and print the signs (and affix them onto two sides of an A4 sized bit of card). Check here shortly for the downloadable sign. Be sure to have somewhere to store the card when you aren't using it during the ride (somewhere where the message won't be broadcast).

If you are attending the ride as a photographer, we would like to remind you that the there are various points along the route which feature particularly striking backgrounds for photos of the ride (eg- Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Oxford Street, US Embassy).

Three generations of men and women, in various states of undress, on bikes, a skateboard and a Segway, converged at 4:00 PM to the designated rendez vous place: the Community Gardens. They were shocked to see tens of curious onlookers already there, tipped off by a well orchestrated publicity campaign. It was immediately a festive scene, with riders and onlookers alike checking out the costumes, signs, and get-ups, people snapping pictures with anything from cell-phones to broadcast TV cameras. A neighbor excitedly came by with a basked of candies to help the riders celebrate. (It was a far cry from the previous year, when barely a dozen of embarrassed, cold riders met and tried to encourage each other in the otherwise empty gardens.) So emboldened, the group headed into the residential streets. The plan was to head east on deserted paths to give people time to gain courage. That plan was spoiled by the Boulder Police. Within five minutes, a police cruiser arrived and stopped the group. They had received a complaint (such incredible fast responsiveness!) and wanted to check everyone's IDs. Half the group said the heck with it, turned around and was led by Robin (whose nipples doubled as the noses of two cute drawn mice). That group headed straight downtown (no further emboldening needed), screaming chants such as ("More Ass / Less Gas", "My ass is clean / How about your gasoline") to the great cheers of onlooker. Mostly. One onlooker was a young man holding a baby in his arm, covering the baby's eyes (!); when told that seeing a few naked bodies wouldn't harm the child, the man, stopped covering the child's eyes just long enough to flip the riders the bird. In the meanwhile, the police let the other group go after finishing the perfunctory action of taking some names, to allow them to tell the concerned citizens that they had taken action. This group headed east, according to the previous plan, and went by the local community station, KGNU, where an amused DJ interviewed a few of them. Through that radio interview, the first group found out where the second group was, and a plan was made to rendez vous along the Boulder Creek. By now the reunited group numbered around 50, a very heartening turnout, for a relatively small city such as Boulder! After one more lap through the downtown area, interrupting buskers and shocking out-of town visitors, the group headed back to the starting point, the home of one of the organizers, for cheering, marry making, group photos, and eventually revert to what by now felt like a very cumbersome custom: wearing clothes.

The ride was postponed by a week to accommodate people who planned to attend other like-minded events on 10 June. Again, about 60 people took part. There was more nudity, as participants had become more comfortable with it. This year the Media were absent at the start, though a few reporters simply rode with us (clothed). The ride included a plunge in the Boulder Creek, which gave an excuse for the shyer ones to finally shed their clothes. Unfortunately, a few people quit the ride at the end, and went to a liquor store, where two of them were arrested. The circumstances are under dispute. Here are two sides of the story:

The ride is planned for 9-June-2007 at 4:00pm in the sleepy suburb of Montclair, New Jersey (about 15 miles west of NYC).

We will meet under the big flagpole in the small park at Watchung Plaza, which is right next to the Watchung Avenue train station. Meet at 3:30; ride begins at 4:00. The route is a 2.5 mile loop repeated 3 times. It's a very easy ride with no big hills and the speed limit is 25mph for most of it.

==How to join an existing ride==
Participants are encouraged to:

===Sign up===
* Select from an existing event using the sign-up form on the upper right of the [http://www.worldnakedbikeride.org/ World Naked Bike Ride] home page
* Indicate in the form that you want to join the ride
* If you can volunteer to put up flyers or help in any way, please indicate so in the comment box
* Having filled out the form and clicked "Submit", ride organisers should receive a message indicating your interest

* Visit the local or national web site using information provided on the [[List of rides]] page
* Take note of the date, start time and location of the event
* Join any local discussion groups to keep up-to-date on the progress of the ride, opportunities for getting involved, and any last-minute announcements

==Check your bike==
Make sure your bike is roadworthy. In particular check:

* Brakes work properly
* Tyres are sufficiently inflated
* Chain runs freely and the gear changes are smooth
* No obvious loose connections (check especially your handlebars, saddle, cranks, pedals)
* Wheels run true (don't wobble from side to side when moving)

==What to bring==
===Essentials===
* Bike, skates or a skateboard (if you haven't got one, you could hire or borrow one)
* One or more bags to carry clothes etc. Bags attaching to your bike are best as they do not restrict your movement, make your back sweat too much or obscure any slogans you have written there. If you do not have a pannier, saddle, rack or handlebar-bag, use a backpack that attaches to your body and leaves both hands free
* Front and rear lights in case it's dark when you are going home
* Snacks to keep you going until your next meal
* Sun screen

===Useful extras===
* Basic tool kit specific to your bike, including spare inner tube and other means of dealing with punctures
* Bicycle pump
* Water bottles filled with a (non-alcoholic!) drink of your choice
* Bells, whistles, horns etc to make noise

==Ride etiquette==
During the ride there should be a ride leader and back marker. Ride will have either stewards or police escort who will hold up the traffic at junctions when necessary to keep the riders together. For everyone's safety, please observe the following advice:

* Do not stray from the route or other riders
* Do not race ahead or overtake the ride leader, especially if you do not know the way
* Try not to drop behind the back marker
* Be aware of pedestrians
* On shared-use paths, keep to the side marked as a cycle lane. If cycle lane is marked, be prepared to stop if pedestrians or dogs get in your way
* Follow normal traffic rules, stopping at red lights etc unless directed to clear a junction by a steward, who will temporarily hold up traffic on your behalf
* Creativity and decoration of bikes and bodys is strongly encouraged. If you have body paints, please bring them along. Leaves and other greenery are also useful for draping or twisting around the body. There are lots more ideas at [[Art bike]] and [[Body art]]
* If you want to carry banners, flags or flagpoles please ensure these are attached to your bike in a safe way so that they can't get caught in your wheels, make mounting or dismounting difficult or annoy other riders. In particular avoid anything with sharp edges. Bamboo poles with banners can be attached above head height, but unless you have previous experience of this (plus a strong pannier rack and lots of gaffa tape), it's best not to attempt it
* If you wear a mask, make sure it does not restrict your vision of the road or the other riders around you
