Portland actually has '''three''' naked rides and a naked run this day. See the [http://www.shift2bikes.org/cal/viewpp2009.php?#June13 Pedalpalooza Calendar] for details and more.

The first naked ride is the "Sunny Nekkid Ride" starting at the Joan of Arc statue at NE 39th and Glisan, and 2pm. This will be about the fourth year for this ride. The attendance varies with the weather; tt has had as many as 100 people, and as few as 20.

The second ride is the "Fig Leif Naked Run/Ride" in Forest Park at 7:30pm. We will be hosting a 10K off road naked bike ride and 5k run/walk starting at the paved section of Lief Erickson Drive (400 Yards beyong the gate at the end of NW Thurman). Two canned food items are appreciated and they will be donated to a local soup kitchen in NW Portland. This is the Fourth Annual Run, and the first offroad naked ride. We've added the first off-road addition to the Pedalpalloza events with the Naked Off-Road Adventure on Lief Erickson. Help Show your support and use it as a warm-up for the mid-night ride just down the hill later. Lots of fun for a good cause! Start is 7:30pm at the porta potty area on the paved section of Leif Erickson. Show up a little before to get situated. We will watch your stuff while you ride naked. Nice and secure so you will not be alone naked at the end of the event. We've done this for a few years now. Lot's of fun. Feel like a REAL Portlander!

The big ride, though, starts from and returns to the Pedalpalooza Kickoff Dance Party, which begins at 9 and continues well into the night. The WNBR itself starts at 11:59pm. This year's location is the old coffee warehouse at 2181 NW Nicolai. This is closer to downtown than last year's site, and there is no big hill between the party and downtown, so it should make for a good ride. We expect around 3000 cyclists this year. There is no admission fee for the party but '''Your Bike Is Your Ticket''' -- you must arrive with your bike (or other human-powered transportation such as a skateboard) to be admitted to the party. You must also be at least 18 years old (and have ID to prove it) to get into the party. Of course, anybody can ride with us since the streets are open to all, but for the party we must enforce the 18+ rule. The ride left the Pedalpalpooza Dance Party on Saturday 14 June 2008, 11:59pm, from the Track 7 warehouse at NW 30th and Industrial. The route was long and the pace was fast, which caused problems for some riders. In past years, we often split into multiple groups following different routes, but for some reason this year we all rode the same route.

Though we anticipated 1200-1500 riders, we actually got around 2000. I've been told that that's the official police estimate. It took roughly an hour for the stream of cyclists to pass, and that made some motorists very angry. (And many thousands of people very happy of course.) There was one incident in which a driver deliberately crushed a cyclist's bike.

The party was in the Organics To You warehouse at the East end of the Hawthorne bridge. At the party we distributed about 820 wristbands, and nearly everybody went on the ride so we estimate 800 riders -- not counting people who saw us along the way and spontaneously stripped to ride with us.

The party was amazing, though the OLCC wasn't too thrilled with us. The planning in 2008 will need to be much more careful. The ride itself was chaotic as always. No arrests. One injury when a rider hit a pothole at high speed; he was walking the next day... slowly.

Roughly 500 riders left the Pedalpalooza Dance Party at [http://www.disjecta.org/ Disjecta] ([http://maps.google.com/maps?q=230+East+Burnside+Street,+Portland,+OR 230 East Burnside Street] though its moved since then) at 11:59pm for a long looping ride. Many people did multiple loops that night.

If there's one thing Portlanders love more than bikes, it's their First Amendment. Home to the most strip clubs per capita in the [[United States|US]], it's no wonder Portland is home to the largest World Naked Bike Ride in [[United States|North America]].

As with the prior years the ride will start at or near the Pedalpalooza Dance Party. Watch the [http://www.shift2bikes.org/cal/viewpp2008.php Pedalpalooza calendar ] for the latest information.

It's getting harder and harder to find a venue big enough for us. The ride has been growing by at least 50% each year, and last year's ride had roughly 800 riders (and 850 or so at the party). This year we need space for 1200-1500 people. It has been unusually difficult. Our first choice was a new event space that the fire marshal rated for 600 capacity -- much too small. Our second choice was also being eyed by a major athletic shoe company which, ironically, dragged its feet and took too much time. Our third choice was hit by a barge and condemned. We're now on our fourth choice, the Track 7 warehouse in Northwest Portland, NW 30th and Industrial.

Usually, getting the venue is the hardest part; once we do that, it's all just a mix of paperwork and artwork that we've all done before.

I heard counts over 500 people! Most naked or almost naked, wearing paint and costumes. We rode for about 2.5 hours and made several loops around downtown etc. Club dwellers and street folk cheered all along the way. Then we will return to the party for more dancing.

A secure clothing check will be provided at the Dance Party so that you do not have to worry about your belongings while you are on the ride. As always the ride is 'as naked as you want to be'. Also a body paint area will be set up. We will have members of the bike community circulating through out the Dance Party letting people know that it is '''not cool''' to take photos with cellphones or have any video recording equipment in the party.

Indoor bike parking will also be provided, so make sure you bring your lock.

There is also a daytime ride earlier on 10 June, for people not keen to freeze their kibbles off in the midnight air. It can also be thought of as an extra ride for those that think once is never enough. The daytime ride will meet at 2.30pm at the Joan of Arc Statue on Glisan and 39th.

If there is one thing that Portlanders love more than their bikes ... it is their 1st amendment. Home to the most strip clubs per capita in the US, there is no wonder why we are home to the largest world naked bike ride in North America.

It's getting harder and harder to find a venue big enough for us.
The ride has been growing by at least 50% each year, and last year's ride had roughly 800 riders (and 850 or so at the party). This year we need space for 1200-1500 people. Usually, getting the venue is the hardest part; once we do that, it's all just a mix of paperwork and artwork that we've all done before.

The party was in the Organics To You warehouse at the East end of the Hawthorne bridge. At the party we distributed about 820 wristbands, and nearly everybody went on the ride so we estimate 800 riders -- not counting people who saw us along the way and spontaneously stripped to ride with us.

The party was amazing, though the OLCC wasn't too thrilled with us. The planning in 2008 will need to be much more careful. The ride itself was chaotic as always. No arrests. One injury when a rider hit a pothole at high speed; he was walking the next day... slowly.

Brief – please edit: Just returned home (3.30am). Ride was phenomenal! Weather was not too bad (dry around 60). Dance party before got us warmed up. Participants flooded out. The nighttime ride meets at 11.59pm ''on top'' of the south-east side of the Burnside Bridge (right next to the Dance Party) and will ride downtown. Then we will return to the party for more dancing.

A secure clothing check will be provided at the Dance Party so that you do not have to worry about your belongings while you are on the ride. As always the ride is 'as naked as you want to be'. Also a body paint area will be set up. We will have members of the bike community circulating through out the Dance Party letting people know that it is '''not cool''' to take photos with cellphones or have any video recording equipment in the party.

Indoor bike parking will also be provided, so make sure you bring your lock.

There is also a daytime ride earlier on 10 June, for people not keen to freeze their kibbles off in the midnight air. It can also be thought of as an extra ride for those that think once is never enough. The daytime ride will meet at 2.30pm at the Joan of Arc Statue on Glisan and 39th.

Stencils are much more limited than other forms of printing, such as silkscreens, but their limitations lead to simplicity, and simplicity has its place. Stencils can be beautiful.

Applying the stencils can be a good party activity. You bring the stencils and the spraypaint or ink/roller/iron, and ask each guest to bring something that they want stenciled. That can keep people amused for hours.

== Choosing a stencil material ==

If you're only going to use a stencil a couple dozen times, then you can cut the stencil out of thin cardboard.

If you're going to use the image a lot, then you'd be better off with a material that can't absorb liquids. I like to use the rubbery stuff that refrigerator magnets are made from. I've also used thick foil with good results, though that takes a lot of effort. (I think the foil was originally intended for use as heat shields around house heaters.)

== Making the stencils ==

Get a stencil image you like, scale it to the size you want, and then tape it to the blank stencil material. Cover the entire stencil image with tape, because otherwise the paper will tear as you're cutting through it.

So, yeah, the next step is to cut around the edges of the stencil image. If you have a choice, it's better to overcut into the waste
material (the part that you're removing to allow paint/ink through) rather than the part of the stencil you want to keep. If the stencil has long thin lines, like the "legs" logo below, then be very careful with those. They can rip very easily. I suggest you make those cuts first, partly so that if you mess up you haven't destroyed an hour's work, and partly because the stencil material is strongest when its whole, so you're less likely to tear it.

A utility knife is best for long straight or slightly curving cuts. An xacto knife is useful for small details, and the last 2mm before a vertex that the larger knife never seems to get right.

Be careful. Never pull the knife toward your fingers. I know that sounds astounding obvious, but when you're trying to make a perfect cut there's a tendency to think about where the edge is, and not necessarily where it'll end up if it slips. Watch out for that.

== Using the stencils ==

There are basically two ways to use stencils: You can spray paint, or you can use rollers silkscreening ink.

Spraypaint is messy, but fast. If you need to make a lot of images, then spraypaint may be your only option. Because of the fumes, you should only do this outside (unless you happen to have access to a specially ventilated spraypainting room). Spraypaint tends to fade when washed. Also, if you're applying the stencil to fabric then you'll find that some paints soak right though the fabric without leaving the nice clear mark that you hoped for. Metalic paints seem to work best of fabric. Many short burst of paint work better than a single long spray.

The ink & roller method is slower and more complicated. You need to mix the inks and a fixer (also known as "GAK"), roll it through the stencil onto the object you're stenciling, wait for it to dry, and then iron it with high heat for about 10 minutes to fix the ink to the fabric. If you do it right, the ink will last as long as the fabric.

Either way, you'll need to stop and clean the stencil periodically.
With the roller method, the ink will accumulate on the underside of the stencil which leads to blotchy images. With spraypaint, smaller details will get clogged.

You can get creative by overlapping different images in different colors. This works for both spraypaint and ink. Either way, you need to wait for the first color to dry before you apply the second color. With ink, you do '''not''' need to do the 10-minute ironing between colors though, which is certainly nice.

For spraypaint only, you can get a cool "halo" effect by first holding the stencil about 4mm above the surface and painting it it one color to get a fuzzy image. When that dries, use the stencil in the normal way to lay down a sharp image in a different color.

We will have members of the bike community circulating through out the Dance Party letting people know that it is '''not cool''' to take photos with cellphones or have any video recording equipment in the party.
