The York World Naked Bike Ride is a protest against oil dependency and car culture. It is equally a celebration of the bike and the human body.

The York WNBR is part of Team Green Britain Bike Week (18-26 June 2011).
Route and schedule
The 2012 Ride will take us in new directions, although the central portion of the route should be familiar. The total route distance is expected to be about 6 miles of easy cycling.

As always, everyone is encouraged to go "as bare as they dare" and please don't forget to affix/paint signs on your bike and/or body to indicate the reason why you are riding.

Advantages of the York route: The York route is mostly flat with minimal car traffic. It starts close to the rail and bus stations and there are cycle-hire facilities a short cycle distance from the start. The route passes various landmarks of York including the Minster, historic Bars (city gates), and the iconic Clifford's Tower. It passes down medieval cobbled streets, traverses bridges both ancient and new, and glides along banks of the scenic River Ouse, usually to the accompaniment of some great music.

Advice for Riders 2011
This is common-sense practical advice about preparing for and being safe on the ride. Written by cyclists for cyclists and revised every year. Download your copy here Please read carefully before coming on the ride.

Publicity: 2011 Flyers and Posters
2011 flyers are here for reference. We had two versions: a Girl Flyer and a Boy Flyer, both designed to be printed out back-to-back A6 or postcard size. Click on the links below to check them out: they don't just differ by gender!

York WNBR 2011 Girl Flyer

York WNBR 2011 Boy Flyer

Thanks to Titom and Nick for use of the images. We also had an A4 poster:

York WNBR 2011 A4 Poster

You can print the poster in colour on white paper or black and white on coloured paper. Please try and place in a prominent position in your local community centre, college, bike shop etc and circulate amongst your cycling friends and fellow activists.

Riders are encouraged to distribute flyers among their friends, fellow cyclists, at their college, community group, workplace etc. Laminated versions can even be displayed at key locations outside, e.g. attached to lamposts along cycle paths. With a little ingenuity flyers can also be attached to bikes. When organising leaflet distribution we are often on the look-out for a place where we can leave flyers for people to collect (with a person or business in York perhaps). If you know of a business that might be up for this, please ask them to ring 0798 116 1591 or write to york [at] worldnakedbikeride [dot] org.

If you would like to donate some art-work for future York WNBR events, please get in touch.

Bike hire
Bikes can be hired from the following places:

Bob Trotter Cycles 13-15 Lord Mayors Walk, York, YO31 7HB, T: 01904 622868<br />
City centre cycle hire store just outside the city walls, a short stroll from York Minster. Adult bike half-day hire for £13. Tandems also available.

Get Cycling is a company based at 22 Hospital Fields Road, YO10 4DZ, between Fulford Road and Millennium Bridge. Phone 01904 636812. WNBR participants, or anybody going in and saying the magic words 'World Naked Bike Ride' gets 10% off the prices listed here. They offer a bike helmet and lock, and to guarantee a bike, pre booking is essential. They are open 8.30 til 6 on Saturday and 10 til 4 on Sunday. Bikes may be hired one day and returned the next. The best thing is that they are VERY close to the start of the ride.

Meetings and events
Ride planning takes place online at the <!--WNBR UK Yahoo! group, on the -->WNBR York Yahoo! group, and at York planning meetings.

Planning meetings for 2012 will be advertised here. Please check this space regularly. In 2011 we frequently used the Seahorse Hotel, Fawcett Street (near York Barbican Centre) and may well do so again.

FILM & DISCUSSION EVENINGS.<br />

Films available:

Indecent Exposure to Cars - “I see painted naked people on bicycles” (Directed by Conrad Schmidt, Ragtag productions 2007). A light-hearted slightly corny take on the origins of the WNBR movement.
York World Naked Bike 2008 - see Souvenir DVD below.

Previous Rides
2011
The 4 June ride went the opposite way around our usual circuit and started and ended in the middle (it that makes sense!) at the gleaming Millennium Bridge. The weather was a little warmer than last year, but a few more degrees would have helped keep the chill off when we were stationary at some of those really slow-phased traffic lights. Although there was a lower turn-out than last year, the good humour, colourful body-paint and decorated bikes of many of our riders more than made up for it.

We cycled a pleasant route over Millennium Bridge and along Terry Avenue into town. It took several goes to get through the junction of Skeldergate and Bridge Street before we took on the late Saturday-afternoon crowds in Coney Street. We triumphantly passed by the Minster and veered southwards down Petergate and onto Pavement and Coppergate. Once again we called in at Cliffords Tower and did the obligatory circular round the eye of York, before retracing our tyre tracks back towards Ousebridge. We bumped merrily up the steep cobbles of Micklegate.

Another long wait at the Bar (city gate), then we regrouped on Blossom Street and descended to the Knavesmire. We had a brief stop at Ruby’s Crossroads to remember both Ruby and all other cyclists killed on UK roads in recent years, before finally rejoining the riverside path and returning to the Bridge whence we came.

2010
The late afternoon of June 19th was the occasion for the chilliest of our naked bike rides. Nevertheless about 100 riders bared their shivering bodies in a great show of support for an oil-free green future. We processed through the ancient city streets of Petergate, Parliament Street and Coppergate. We rode round the circle below Cliffords Tower and crossed to St George's Field to join the riverside path. Once over the still-shiny Millennium Bridge we called in at the Racecourse where two minutes silence were observed in memory of a young cyclist who was killed there in 2008. The return leg took us via the Mount and a busy Blossom Street and thence under Micklegate Bar and back into the City once more. Our own experienced stewards did their very best to manage ride safety, with scarcely any help from the police. By the time we got to Museum Gardens we were quite glad to get our clothes on once more!

2009
"Bike Pride" was truly in evidence in York on June 12th. We had 100 riders counted on Parliament Street, and the feeling on the ride was great! The new extension offered an interesting peek at Clifton for the out of town folk, and a relaxing start to the ride. The folks in York were typically surprised, bemused, delighted, shocked, nonchalant, and impressed. And once again we took some of the key attractions of the historic city, Lendal Bridge, the Minster, Clifford's Tower, plus the more recent Millennium Cycle Bridge.

The York Press was present as was a crew from Yorkshire TV's Calendar programme. Apparently, before we finished the ride, the people of Yorkshire knew all about it via their evening televisions. phone number lookup

After an excellent pro-cycling send-off speech - and blast on the air horn - from Green city councillor Dave Taylor, we all set off via Marygate, emerging onto Bootham where we became the main outbound traffic. We had lots of elaborately decorated bikes and beautifully painted and decorated bodies riding them! The police were happy to assist us at junctions and were in a good mood about the whole thing.

A number of riders had the words "Less Gas More Ass" on their backs in memory of Jonathan Brooke who sadly passed away in 2008 and to whom this ride was dedicated. He had participated in all three previous York rides. He loved the ride, and his relaxed, friendly, and enthusiastic nature was a delight to fellow riders.

We were fortunate to have the company on this ride of the UK's oldest rider: Margaret or 'Gran' who rode the entire route in good spirits at the spritely age of 87. While she found the London ride in 2005 too cold to ride in the nude, she managed the rides in London 2006 and York 2009 with the clothes she was born with.

What a great ride! I look forward to 2010!

(Report by Jesse and Tony)

2008
There were 90 riders (89 people and one dog in a trailer), and the atmosphere was excellent. We were warmly received throughout York, and initial responses suggest that the new route variation was popular.

At the assembly point there was some hectic last minute body-painting and interviews with the media then we all relocated to the Esplanade for the official ride opening. Local campaigner Randall Ghent from the World Carfree Network opened the proceedings with a rousing send-off speech and three toots on an air-horn. The ribbon was cut and off we rode to the tune of “Bare Necessities”.

Proceeding over Lendal Bridge towards the Minster there were some fine shots to be had of naked cyclists against the sunlit backdrop of the cathedral’s west front. We rode down historic Petergate, Colliergate, across to Fossgate and up over the little cobbled bridge than spans the river Foss. Along George Street we gave a passing nod to the last resting place of highwayman Dick Turpin, then it was through Fishergate Bar and down to join the banks of the Ouse. Many had turned out to watch and applaud us as we went over Millennium Bridge and headed northwards once more to rejoin the city walls at Skeldergate. We meandered through some quiet streets and found ourselves on historic Micklegate – and more cobbles! Ousebridge was full of traffic as usual though at least half of it this time consisted of our naked selves. On Coney Street there were throngs of people cheering us on the home run. Finally a bevy of photographers - with very little help from the police – kindly blocked the traffic for us as we crossed to finish our ride in Museum Gardens.

There was lots of noise and happy faces on that day, bikes of all descriptions and some really artistic body-painting. Nearly everyone had a message either on their body or attached to their bike. One way or another we certainly demonstrated that biking it is better.

Planning collective
The York Planning Collective consists of a group of local cyclists working together in a co-operative way to a single end. Some of us are based in York itself, some live in the surrounding towns and villages. We still need more volunteers to get involved - that could be YOU!

Here's what the Collective does:
* answers people's questions with care and consideration
* keeps track of who is doing what, and how far through things people are
* deals with problems and follow the discussions at the national level
* provides email updates to let people know what's going on
* points out where and when help is needed
* acts as a contact point for general enquiries (email and mobile phone)
* maintains contact information (and keeps it secure)

Additional responsibilities for the coordinator of one of the Collective members:
* arranges meetings, compile agendas, provide minutes
* ensures that the Collective remains non-hierarchical but organised
* moderates an email list for York ride planning
First Planning Meeting 2011
The first planning meeting for the 2011 ride will take place at the Rummer Tavern at 7PM on Thursday the 24th of March, Duke Street (opposite the castle). We'll be the ones with the bright pink World Naked Bike Ride flag on the table.

If you fancy helping out in whatever way however large or small or if you just want to come along and meet some fellow riders please get in touch as it would reassure me greatly. I had a great time last year and felt so proud with the success of the ride. It also taught me some valuable skills, enhancing my CV and giving me something interesting to talk about at job interviews (and I did get the job!). Lets meet up, share some ideas and have a laugh. We'll be updating the wiki after the meeting so keep an eye open for further information at the end of March.

Second Planning Meeting 2011
The second planning meeting will take place on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 7:00pm in the Rummer Tavern (Opposite the Castle), Cardiff, Duke Street (opposite the castle). Once again I'll be the one with the bright pink World Naked Bike Ride flag on the table. We also hope to have some flyers and posters available for anyone who would like to help spread the word.

Final Planning Meeting 2011
The final planning meeting of 2011 will take place in late May in the Rummer Tavern, Duke Street (opposite the castle). Once again I'll be the one with the bright pink World Naked Bike Ride flag on the table. We will be discussing promotions and press releases, posters and flyers will be available, if you would like to help out in this area or just meet up with your fellow riders for a drink please feel free to come along and bring a friend!

History
2010
2010 Ride Report - On the Saturday the 12th of June, Cardiff's third running of the World Naked Bike Ride took place. The ride, highlighting the need for a less oil dependent future, the vulnerability of cyclists in city traffic and promoting body freedom was, once again, a great success. Full report coming soon!

2009
62 riders began the ride, according to Facebook event report. However, we picked up some extra riders along the way and ended with 67.

2009 Ride Report - On the Saturday the 13th of June, Cardiff's second running of the World Naked Bike Ride took place. The ride, highlighting the need for a less oil dependent future, the vulnerability of cyclists in city traffic and promoting body freedom was, once again, a great success. After a slight delay with the police escort and a last minute route adjustment, the ride set of at 4:15p.m. with 62 riders. The public reception of the ride was excellent, word seemed to have gotten around that the ride was taking place and people looked like they were expecting us. After picking up five extra riders at the halfway mark we headed back through town and ended the ride with a respectable 67 riders. The media coverage of the ride was awesome. We made the BBC Wales evening news, and had good coverage in the Wales on Sunday and the South Wales Echo. A good time was had by all and there is much to look forward to with next years ride. I hope we can build up the numbers for the next one. I think we have gained a few new recruits already so we have a head start for 2010.

2008
Wales's first ever WNBR took place in Cardiff on 14 June 2008. An enthusiastic band of riders planned the ride within a relatively short time and an atmosphere of growing enthusiasm and commitment was generated. Following this hugely positive event, interest in the 2009 ride soon began spreading far and wide.

2008 Ride Report - Cardiff's first ever WNBR was a resounding success - declared by many to have been awesome! The sun shone (despite forecasts suggesting otherwise) and at 4.00 p.m. 37 riders rode out onto the streets of a busy Cardiff which was also marking Veterans Day and preparing for a Bruce Springstein concert! A wonderful mix of people sporting a range of adornments and slogans made their way from Cathays Park to Cardiff Bay and back along the city's main highways, with an outstanding response from the public who snapped up all the on-ride leaflets in no time! Media coverage was wide and positive. The police escort were efficient and friendly. Riders came from all round Cardiff and area as well as a few from Bristol, Hereford and other places. Participants applauded loudly when we reached our destination in Sophia Gardens and pledged to come back next year for an even more positive and powerful event.

About the ride
Assembly point
The 2008, 2009 &amp; 2010 assembly point was in a quiet, enclosed area with grass and trees, easily found to the rear of the National Museum of Wales. The Museum is located in the Civic Centre in Cathays Park, immediately next door to City Hall, with its distinctive tower. The area in question is between Park Place and Museum Avenue. Here is a map of the assembly location. This is also the intended assembly point for 2011.

Dress code
Come as bare as you dare. Nudity makes a great statement, and many of us will be completely naked again this year - but if you're more comfortable in a little clothing, that's fine too. On previous rides, riders wore shorts, bras, swimwear, body paint, head-dresses, wigs, sunglasses etc. Most wore footwear and brought bags to carry clothes. Body painting and adornment, customised bikes, portable seed-trays and other creative expression are all strongly encouraged.

Route
The route of Cardiff World Naked Bike Ride 2011 is still being planned. However it will broadly follow previous rides routes Form the Civic Centre to the Bay and back into town, ending as always in Sophia Gardens. This year we are looking to extend the ride with a ride around the park, assuming that the weather is good! Hopefully it will make the end of the ride a little less abrupt that previous years, where we have simply cycled in to the park and ended the ride. Last year, unfortunately, we were forced cut out the short distance that we usually do on Queen Street following a number of complaints from other cyclists who don't see why we should be allowed to cycle on Queen Street whilst they are banned from doing so. We will be trying to get this portion of the route reinstated this year. It's a shame that fellow cyclists should be so petty minded. Proof, if it were ever needed, that nobody is perfect! Below is the 2010 route as an example for new riders. We'll post the 2011 route as soon as possible.

Last Years Route -

Assembly Point - Cathays Park - Grassed area adjacent to the University Main Building (bounded by Park Place and Museum Avenue).

Setting off at 4PM - Form up on the path facing Museum Avenue. Left into Museum Avenue.

Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, left into King Edward VII Avenue. Gorsedd Gardens Road, right into Park Place. Greyfriars Street, North Road. Duke Street, Castle Street, Westgate Street, St Mary Street, Callaghan Square, Bute Street, Herbert Street, Lloyd George Avenue. Onto cycle path (left hand pavement) after Hemingway Road.

Over crossing to pass in front of Millennium Centre, to the rear of the Pier Head Building, pause in front of the Senedd.

Set off along the front of the Pier Head Building, returning past the front of the Millennium Centre. Left across the forecourt to the crossing giving access to the westbound carriageway of Lloyd George Avenue. Across the crossing and north up Lloyd George Avenue. Left into Herbert Street, ahead into Callaghan Square, St. Mary Street, right into Mill Lane, The Hayes, Trinity Street, St. Johns Street, left into Duke Street, Castle Street, Cowbridge Road East. Onto the cycle path (left hand pavement) over Cardiff Bridge and into Sophia Gardens.

This year we will be concluding with a lap of Sophia Gardens to enable a disabled cyclist to join us and will be finishing up as per usual near the Mochyn Du pub where we can get dressed and head for a well earned pint!

Riders are advised bring a bag or pannier to carry clothes and possessions.

Legality
The police have facilitated all previous rides; riders found the officers most helpful, and they in turn fully acknowledged our right to demonstrate in our chosen manner saying that they were impressed with the public reaction last year. One of the veterans on the Veteran Day celebrations 2008 actually told the police that he thought that it was marvelous. To put it simply, simple nudity isn't illegal in the UK, but using nudity intentionally to cause harassment, alarm or distress may be illegal. Don't act in an offensive or lewd manner and you are not going to get arrested.

Photography Policy
2011 sees Leah Sian join the team as our official photographer and as such she has created a photographic policy based on that used by the London ride setting out the terms under which she will operate. It is hoped that any riders or members of the press wishing to photograph the ride will also feel able to abide by it's terms.

WORLD NAKED BIKE RIDE - CARDIFF
PHOTOGRAPHIC POLICY

Photographing and filming policy

This is the first policy written by members of the World Naked Bike Ride - Cardiff.

2011 POLICY

Photography is encouraged throughout the ride; it is a means of promoting the message propagated through banners and body paint. Being in a public place, the law does not often support individuals but rather photographers rights, during this ride, there are some restrictions to photographs and videos. This policy is intended to discourage any inconsiderate photography which may take place. We wish to create a safe and supportive environment for all riders.
All photographers present at the ride must abide by this policy. Those who don't will be asked to leave. This includes any riders and press. This policy will be available to anyone to download.

PHOTOGRAPHERS BEHAVIOUR

Photographers are expected to behave in a respectful, friendly and reasonable manner at all times. If you make any rider uncomfortable, you will be required to leave the assembly/ride area.

AT THE ASSEMBLY AREA (before and after the ride)

Ask permission before photographing a rider

No photos of people dressing, or undressing, being painted are permitted unless requested by riders

No photos of people in the designated no photo zone

DURING THE RIDE

No close-up photos without consent from the rider

ENFORCING THE PHOTO POLICY (by you the riders)

Our hope is that all riders will be aware of the policy and feel comfortable enough to step forward to debate the policy. If any riders should wish not to be photographed at the event, there are some measures you are able to take to prevent this happening.

1) Contact the World Naked BikeRide Cardiff photographer - Leah Sian at LeahSian@live.co.uk or talk to her in person at one of the meetings. She will make sure to avoid you at the event. If you contact by email it would be beneficial to get a head shot to identify you at the event.

2) At World Naked Bike Ride London riders often create a "Photo Policy Enforcement Board" a sign to attach to card with an example of the policy and a sign that says, "This Photo was taken without permission". This can be downloaded from the following link:
http://wiki.worldnakedbikeride.org/images/8/84/London2008photopolicyboard.pdf

Public transport
The 2011 ride will start within easy cycling distance of Cardiff Central Rail Station, served by frequent trains from various parts of Wales and England.

Signing up
It's not essential to sign up for the ride - you can just turn up on the day - but it does help to get an idea of anticipated numbers. To sign up, visit the yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wnbr-cardiff/ .
Events
In December 2007 Johnny Zapatos's film about the London WNBR in 2005 was given a showing at the Chapter Centre. The film provoked a good deal of positive discussion. To contribute ideas for other showings, or ideas for any other events anywhere in Wales, please visit the WNBR Cardiff/Caerdydd Yahoo! group.

Publicity
Posters & Flyers
The designs for the 2010 posters and flyers have been done and copies will be available at planning meetings for anyone who would like to help publicize the ride or if you ask nicely and live, work or study in Cardiff I might be able to drop some round to you. If you live further afield and e-mail me I can e-mail you back with PDF's so you can print off some of your own or if you have a really great idea for somewhere to advertise, such as a bike shop or mountain biking centre, I might be able to stretch to a stamp.
Please remember that Cardiff World Naked Bike Ride only receives very limited funding for printing costs from World Naked Bike Ride UK and use those posters and flyers wisely or better still help us out by printing/photocopying your own (at work maybe!), thanks.

Ride information
Dress Code: "Is Nudity mandatory?"
It's not such a silly question when you think about the name of the event but No, nudity is not mandatory.

The official dress code is that genitalia should be covered as well as nipples, to avoid scaring small children and horses, and after that, go wild.

In previous years, riders have worn shorts, bras, swimwear, body paint, wigs, sunglasses etc. Most wear footwear and bring bags to carry clothes. Body painting and adornment, customised bikes and other creative expression are all strongly encouraged.

See also the United Kingdom FAQ for more information on this topic

Legality
Although there has been a lot of media attention on the legality of nudity on these rides it really is something of a non-issue. For the record, anyone who turns up fully nude will be risking arrest on a charge of "Outraging Public Decency". Older and wiser heads have informed us that this has been the case for most rides in the early years, we have just been stuck with it because Edinburgh WNBR has so far never run continuously for more than a year or two, meaning negotiations have to be opened afresh each time.

This is an organised event, and there will be a police escort. Since the Police are there for our protection (we will be riding en-masse in traffic after all) we would prefer not to aggravate them unnecessarily. The Police were fantastic and friendly in 2010 and this event would like to continue having an amicable relationship.

The clothing options are pretty simple: Bare-as-you-Dare (except for Nipples and Nadgers)

Now on to the fun stuff: Decoration!

Decoration
Now we know where the limits are (ie. the absolute bare minimum) lets have fun with it. Last year people were plastering each other with body paint, nipple tassels and comedy G-strings. We work best when we are forced to improvise, so improvise your hearts out.

We will do our best to provide some screens to get changed behind, but we guarantee nothing. Why not have a 'painting-party' beforehand, and really go to town?

Best of all, take some inspiration from other rides around the world, many of which manage to post pictures that are totally work-safe due to the sheer weight of ornamentation!

Photography
Edinburgh prefers riders rather than photographers. Rider-photographers are OK but we will probably be using the London photography policy unless posted otherwise. That means if your photography behaviour is unwelcome, you'll be required to leave.

Directions
Middle Meadow Walk is a long tree lined avenue through the Meadows Park. At the north end of the Walk is Teviot Place and at the south end is Argyle Place. ===Publicise the ride===
Please help get the word out about this ride. Circulate leaflets. These may be available for collection from a central Edinburgh location (TBA). We'll put a downloadable version here shortly.
2011
Saturday 11 June 2011

In spite of temperatures of less than ten degrees and continuous rain, 10 people were still game enough to make the ride wearing only bodypaint and some scraps of lycra. The ride started at approx 4:30pm, half an hour late due to a last minute storage issue.
On Saturday 11 June 2011 the eighth London World Naked Bike Ride rode the streets of the capital, allowing riders to see the city sights from the comfort of a bike, skates and pedal rickshaws. The bad weather held off and over 1000 people took part to protest against oil dependency and car culture.

*London is the largest daytime WNBR event in the world. We had 1,000 participants on Saturday 12 June 2010!!! Previously we had 1,200 (2009), 1,000 (2007 & 2008), 800 (2006), 250 (2005) and 58 (2004).
*A big thank-you is owed to Team Green Britain Bike Week! They've been brilliant, and we're proud to be part of Bike Week.
*People are also encouraged to join rides in other UK cities – including nearby Brighton and Southampton – which are typically scheduled to take place on different days from London, around the same weekend
*The event will take place whatever the weather – please come prepared for rain, cold or blazing heat!
Ride details
Body Painting and Body Painting Area (informal/small) from 1.30pm till 3pm<br/>
We encourage all riders to buy some body paints for themselves and get painted up before they come to the ride. People who wish to use the WNBR body paints, are welcome to do so.<br/>
<br/>
A list of suitable slogans can be found here if you can't think of your own - Slogans<br/>
<br/>
There is an informal arrangement for a bodypainting group this year. We will provide body paints, stencils and sponge brushes but no official body painters. Nudity will not be permitted during body painting (equivalent of bathing costume coverage must be worn). Large numbers won't be permitted. Photography won't be allowed.<br/>
<br/>
To learn the location of the informal body painting area, please call or text Will at 07903 019696. This should keep the body-painting relatively private.<br/>
<br/>
See below for more information on Body Painting<br/>
<br/>
Wear clothes before and after the ride<br/>
Do not undress before 3pm in Hyde Park, as this will undermine our positive relationship with the Royal Parks. There is no law against nudity in Britain, but please don't exercise your right to nudity in London before the ride, as it will impact on our ability to make arrangements with police. Feel free to undress in the UK at any other time of the year, as this will not have any impact on the WNBR.
<br/>
Many passers by and photographers who know about the event WILL turn up and take photographs before the ride begins. You only need to get undressed just before the ride if you are uncomfortable doing so with all of the photographers are around. Traffic and congestion will probably pause the protest at various points over the route. If you don't like the idea of being photographed while sitting at a red light, bring something you can cover up with quickly and easily put on and take off.<br/>
<br/>
Some more information about the photography policy can be found here: UK FAQ<br/>
<br/>
Assembly area <BR/>
You can assemble for the ride in the South-East corner of Hyde Park (near to Wellington Arch and Hyde Park Corner - map link) any time between 3:00 and 3:30pm. You can stay dressed as long as you want, but don't get undressed before 3:00pm. If you turn up before 3:00pm, Stewards will ask you to leave and return at 3:00. See the section below to read why. Be prepared to form up ready for departure at about 3:25pm. The ride will be starting at 3:30pm.<br/>
<br/>
Route and start location <br/>
Details of the likely route are below - Route<br/>

It's a really good idea to take your clothes with you on the ride. We don't finish exactly where we started. Make sure they are secured though. You don't want to be the person who lost their clothes on the ride or the one who's friend's decided the ride was taking too long, they had better things to do and went home with your clothes.<br/>
<br/>
Ride length <BR/>
9 miles. Very few hills. An easy, leisurely ride!.<br/>
<br/>
Finish <BR/>
In 2011 the plan is to finish the at the Wellington Arch - i.e. back to an almost circular route. When you arrive at the end of the ride, congratulate yourself and fellow riders on staging a successful protest. The finish area will not be a venue for prolonged naked socialising. So when you've found your friends, taken your photographs and celebrated the highlights of the ride, please get dressed and move on to continue your celebrations elsewhere. In particular, please note that playing games, such as Frisbee or ball games, in the finish area is not allowed.<br/>
<br/>
The dispersal will commence as soon as the ride finishes. People will be asked by Stewards to leave the roadway, dress and depart immediately.<BR>
<br/>
Dispersal <br/>
Get dressed before you leave the finish area. If you decide to move into surrounding areas, please show consideration for others. Remember that any misbehaviour that is associated with WNBR riders may jeopardise our ability to continue assembling anywhere in London in future years.<br/>
<br/>
After Ride Celebration <BR/>
There are no official after ride parties planned for 2011. Anyone arranging gatherings elsewhere or parties in the evening is not affiliated with the World Naked Bike Ride.<BR/>

Extended ride option
2010 Sipson Ride Extension <br/>
In 2010 an optional 15.5 mile extension to the main WNBR route was available to demonstrate support for the campaigners who saved the village of Sipson (which was due to be demolished to allow a third Heathrow runway to be built). Options were considered for running a similar event, but a suitable issue to protest and people to manage the ride were not identified. If you have any suggestions for an extension ride to be run in future, get in touch.<BR/>

Ride support
Bike rental <BR/>
<!-- Moved to the top as the London Bicycle Tour Company have apparently fully booked all their bikes now -->
For a list of the bike hire locations, visit the following page from London Cycle Campaign (LCC) - List of Cycle Hire Shops in London. <br/>
<br/>
The London Bicycle Tour Company hire bikes to riders from 12.30pm-7pm for £12.<br/>
Follow the Instructions for WNBR participants on the London Bicycle Tour Company web site booking page<BR/>
NOTE: If you are booking for World Naked Bike Ride you must select 'number of days: 16' in the booking form even though you will only be hiring the bike for 1 day. Also, you must select 'W.N.B.R.' as the event. This will bring up the correct discounted price. You will need to book with a credit card or bring a large cash deposit to hire the bike. Bike delivery will not be available for the discount price - bikes must be collected from the shop. Advanced booking is required to guarantee bike availability. <br/>

Full details and instructions on how to pre-book your bike are on the London_Bike_Hire page.<br/>

Another option is Barclays Cycle Hire. However, this is intended for short journeys, so please make sure that you understand the costs involved. If you rent a bike for 3-6 hours, you pay £1 for the access fee and £35 for the usage fee! This is quite plausible, since the London ride assembles at 15:00 and normally finishes at about 18:00. Also, you may not be able to collect or return a bike at the nearest docking station, if it's empty at the start and full at the end, so you need to allow for extra travelling time.

If you are hiring a bike, and you have a bare bum, please cover the saddle. This will protect you from any dirt, as well as being polite to the next person who uses the bike.

Skate rental <BR/>
For £10 rental and a £100 deposit, you can hire well maintained SKATES plus full padding from Club Blue Room for the entire day. They can't hire if it's a rainy day. Skates must be undamaged dry and clean when returned. They are located at Marble Arch. Phone for details - 020 7724 4884<BR>
<BR/>
Decoration and leaflets <BR/>
This year we are providing cloth flags again (donations please, minimum £3.50) and these are stitched to easily fit on bamboo poles which you can tape to your bike frame/rack. We are also providing "race cards" - paper signs that easily attach to the front of your bike with the messages of the WNBR. Donations are appreciated to help us cover the costs. There will be leaflets available which explain the ride more clearly to passers by. These items can be collected from just behind the Info Stall (location to be advised). Please see the London bike decoration page for more detailed suggestions.<BR/>
<BR/>
Photography policy <BR/>
Please keep referring to the London photography policy as things progress, which will make it clear what photography behaviour is unwelcome. If presence of photographers makes people uncomfortable, we recommend riders consider adopting the following measures:
* The most effective measure is to avoid disrobing at the assembly. Simply wear something that can be easily removed when the ride pauses on route. The problem photography rarely occurs during the ride;<BR>
* Verbally address the photographer by saying "Go away, I do not wish to be photographed". At the same time, hold up your hand to indicate the universal gesture of "stop/halt/no". If this doesn't work, address the people near to you, asking them to stand between you and the photographer;<BR/>
* Leafleting before and during the ride may be a good way to overcome discomfort from being stared at, and make you less likely to be targeted by problem photographers. The activity of engaging with bystanders makes you seem less vulnerable and this seems to appeal less to any problem photographers; <BR/>
* We will again have a sign you can . Some riders have found this useful in dealing with problem photographers;
* If you have a camera, taking a photograph of persistent photographers and telling them to leave or you'll report them can work too.<br/>
<BR/>
PA equipment <BR/>
Use of PA equipment or amplification within the Serious and Organised Crime Police Act (SOCPA) zone should be avoided, as it is not-legal. We recommend turning off any sound amplification for the sections of ride along Whitehall, Parliament Square, Westminster Bridge and York Road.<BR/>
<BR/>
Health & safety <br>
Footwear is required in order to allow riders to come to a safe emergency stop. <br>
Helmets are not compulsory. We advise you to consider the evidence on cycling safety and helmets, then take your own decision on whether to wear a helmet or not. <br/>
Bicycles are to be ridden in a manner appropriate for use on the road. All riders should be seated on appropriate seats in line with The Highway Code. Don't take passengers on luggage racks or handlebars.<br/>
Owing to safety concerns, runners are no longer permitted in the World Naked Bike Ride in London.<BR/>

Objectives and demands
Each year, the World Naked Bike Ride collective in London agrees on a set of objectives and demands for the year's ride. The objectives and demands of the ride are shown below.<br/>
<BR/>
In 2011 the main theme of the ride will be improving safety for cyclists. We are also supporting the LCC Safer Lorries Campaign<br/>
Objectives
*Obtain real rights for cyclists and demonstrate the vulnerability of cyclists on city streets
*Protest against the global dependency on oil
*Curb car culture
*Celebrate body freedom
Demands
*“Real rights for bikes”:
**Safer streets for cyclists
**Cycle-only zones in cities
**Separate 2-way cycle lanes
*A ban on car advertising
Participating in the ride
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
See the United Kingdom FAQ and global FAQ. Visit both pages to find out answers to your questions. We've tried to avoid an overlap of information.<BR/>
Route
Arranging the route for the WNBR requires negotiation with multiple authorities, working around other events, some of which are planned well in advance and others which occur on very short notice. The WNBR isn't the London Marathon and can't agree roads being closed months in advance. We try and ensure the route goes past many of the London landmarks where it will be seen by people on the streets. This helps to promote the goals of the protest ride whilst letting you see London doing something a little bit different. We do try to announce the route beforehand, but sometimes it is difficult to do so without having to change it at the last minute. This is why the route isn't always available beforehand and may even change on the day at the discretion of the lead marshal.<br/>
<br/>
The current plan is to follow a route similar to 2010 but with a return to Hyde Park (a circular 9.3 mile (14.9km) route of mostly flat cycling). The 2011 route should see you passing the London landmarks of Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, Parliament, London Eye, Royal Courts of Justice, Ludgate, St Paul's Cathedral, Covent Garden, The Mall and Wellington Arch. <br/>

The detailed route for Saturday 11 June 2011 is on BikeMap.net here. The list of streets can be seen here.

Legality
The WNBR London organising collective has been working closely with the Metropolitan police since 2005; they are fully aware of the nature of the protest and supportive of our right to make it. We have excellent relations with the police; most years they assist with traffic control and have had their own riders accompanying us (although they keep their uniforms on).<BR/>
<BR/>
Contrary to popular opinion, there is no law against nudity in England and you will not be arrested simply for being nude on this protest. Visit our FAQ answer for more information.<BR/>
<BR/>
Notice: The terms of the 2011 ride have been agreed with the police as in previous years.<BR/>

Body painting
NOTICE: There is an informal body painting area arrangement (see ride details above). We encourage all riders to buy some body paints for themselves and get painted up before they come to the ride.<BR/>
<BR/>
The best way to make sure you are ready for the ride is to get painted at home beforehand. Wear loose-fitting clothing that won't rub it off, and you can always leave final details and touch-ups for the ride. For advice on getting and using body paint, see the UK FAQs. The easiest thing is to have a friend body-paint you, but you can paint yourself if it's an all-over-in-one-colour or message on your legs. <BR/>
<BR/>
For people who aren't able to paint themselves at home, you may wish to do some body painting just before the ride, but you'll have to bring your own paints and painters. From 2006 till 2008, we provided a body painting service from professional painters such as Sitech Creations Ltd . In 2009, there was no official body painting area. We had difficulty due to growing numbers of ride participants, agressive photographers, and the short time available in Hyde Park. Details for the running on an informal body painting session can be found in the ride details section above.<BR/>
<BR/>
Photographers can be a problem at the ride start especially while body painting is taking place. If you notice photographers crowding around someone who is being painted, please politely enquire whether the subject of the photograph is happy to be photographed. If they aren't happy being photographed, please ask the photographers to stop, and consider standing between the photographers and subject (in a polite but assertive manner).<BR/>
<BR/>
Please don't photograph riders who are being painted. Wait till they are fully painted and then ask if they are happy to be photographed. Better still, please photograph the riders during the ride!<BR/>
<BR/>
Bike decoration
We have some great race cards that you can print on card and then attach to your bike. We recommend you use elastic or twist-ties to secure to your bike. There are PDF instructions here. If you are feeling generous, print and prepare a few extra to give to other riders. There is a selection of four cards for you to choose from; click on the captions to download the full-size card for printing. <BR/>
Public transport
See the UK FAQs.

Weather
We've had good weather at each of the UK rides so far, indeed stunning hot sunshine in 2006 and 2007. Does that mean statistically we're predicting rain? The ride will not be cancelled in the event of rain, but it just might be shortened. If so, follow the Marshals' instructions.
<br/><br/>
In any case bring warm dry clothes to change into after the ride, and keep them dry.
<br/><br/>
A large, thin plastic bag (such as you get from your dry cleaner) could be an effective protection if you want to seem naked in the rain. Maybe we can beat the Vancouver record for most naked riders in the rain!
<br/><br/>
For a five-day weather forecast, visit one of Met Office, MetCheck or BBC Weather (and choose day).
Other Discounts
Hotels and Shows
Theatre Breaks are offering a 10% discount hotels in London - places that have committed to accepting guests and their bicycles.

Getting involved
There are lots of ways you can help to organise or promote the ride. Please contact us in the Yahoo group if you have any useful special skills and are able to help in any way.

Poster
As with the 2009 ride, some A4 posters will be printed ahead of the 2011 ride. If more are needed, a PDF file can be downloaded from
*Full colour A4 Poster for London (UK design)
for printing locally.

Spread the word
Everyone can help to make the next ride even more successful than the last. There are lots of ideas for promoting the ride at the UK Promote page.

Planning meetings
Riders are invited to any of the London ride planning meetings. The London ride organising group is a collective, and holds just 5 meetings to make all the key decisions about the ride (and allocate responsibilities). Any rider is welcome to attend the meetings (and thus be part of the "London ride planning collective"). The meeting agenda can include route/time, negotiations with police, improving the experience for new riders, presswork, and any other matters that people bring to the meeting. Meetings are open to non-London riders who are involved in planning rides in their local area. Press are not welcome to the planning meetings.

The 2011 meetings are as follows (19:00 start for all meetings):

# Thursday 10 February 2011 (Frank to facilitate/produce minutes)
# Thursday 24 March 2011
# Thursday 14 April 2011
# Thursday 12 May 2011
# Thursday 26 May 2011 or 09 June 2011

<!-- Plus a post-ride review meeting (for people who participated in organising the ride)
# Thursday 24 June 2010 -->

Meetings are held at South Bank Centre's Royal Festival Hall. The 24 March meeting will be held at the Green Bar in the Royal Festival Hall (4th level, on the "green side" - the side nearer the London Eye). For future meetings, check this page, and/or see the wnbr-London yahoo list. We try to remember to have WNBR things out so it is easier to spot the meeting. If you are in doubt, just ask "is this the bike ride meeting?"

Get in touch (or just show up at a meeting) if you want to join in the planning the next ride. uk [at] worldnakedride.org or 07814 587361

Interviews
The press, radio and TV are fascinated by WNBR. We need riders to explain their personal perspective on the ride in interviews. If you are willing to help out with interviews, please contact londonpress [at] wnbr.org.uk and/or your local ride coordinator or call the Press Office.

On the day
We need people to pass out leaflets at the assembly point and during the ride. If you plan to pass out leaflets on the ride, you need to have a good scheme for carrying the leaflets, so they don't spill out or blow away, but so you still can reach them to pass out. We're going to try to pass out leaflets to the crowd at the assembly point and then during the ride.

Being a volunteer steward
In order to ensure the smooth running of this year’s London World Naked Bike Ride, we are asking for volunteer stewards to look after the welfare of riders. Last year's stewards did a great job, and we're looking to provide even better stewarding this year (e.g. more effective, more friendly, more responsive).

The purpose of WNBR stewards is to monitor the safety and wellbeing of riders, and to provide advice and assistance where necessary. Stewards will be a visible presence amongst riders and will help to ensure that participants are safe, that they don't get lost or separated from the main ride and that assistance is available to those who get left behind or have breakdowns. During the Assembly, the Stewards will primarily be directing riders into the ride assembly area, and helping the ride to form up for departure. Stewards will enforce the ride's photo policy through polite but firm verbal intervention.

As a steward you will be required to:
*Register to be a steward in advance (if you turn up on the day with an offer to help, there will be limited things you can assist with and it probably won't be an exciting job).
*Attend the pre-ride Steward Induction and Training Session (date/time TBA) <!-- at 3pm to 5pm on Saturday 5 June 2010 or 3pm to 5pm on Sunday 6 June 2010 --> at the Achilles statue in Hyde Park.
*Arrive in Hyde Park by 1pm on Saturday 11 June 2011 for an additional Ride Briefing.
*Act as a steward for the event from 1pm until 6pm (very busy from 2pm to 5pm).
*Wear shoes and clothes for the duration of the ride
*Wear a high-visibility vest that you borrow and return to the lead steward.

Additionally, you will be expected to:
*Be a confident and proficient cyclist
*Be able to follow instructions from the Lead Steward.
*Be reasonable, responsible and approachable.
*Maintain a courteous and friendly disposition (even under pressure).
*Bring a small rucksack in which to put useful items such as: a puncture repair kit, spare T-shirt, bottle of water, bike pump. (If you have any of these, it would be most appreciated if you could bring them along, if not, we will endeavour to provide them).
*Carry a mobile phone (for use only in emergencies).

In return, you will receive:
*A FREE World Naked Bike Ride flag (Normally only available for £3 donation).
*A free DVD of the 2005 World Naked Bike Ride which normally costs £10 (you receive this if you attend the training session).
*Support, assistance and guidance from the Lead Steward.
*A warm glow knowing that you’ve helped to make the London WNBR a success!

If you have a PMR radio handset (walkie talkie), please bring it with you.

Dress code
For details, please see our Frequently asked questions
The World Naked Bike Ride dress code is "Bare As You Dare"... How bare is that ? How dare is that ?...Its all up to you, you decide what you are comfortable with. NO ONE IS EXCLUDED OR DISCRIMINATED AGAINST based on levels of clothing, bodypaint, or anything else, for that matter!

PLEASE be creative and colourful! Bodypainting and bike decorating is highly encouraged! See the above section on creative expression and also visit our body art page.

Body Paint Artists wanted!!!!

WNBR is a fun, inspirational, non-confrontational body-positive event with a positive message of hope. That is why the ride has been such a huge hit and so many are supportive. Just use common sense and mind your manners! Nude is not lewd!

Since most of us did not grow up in a body-positive society, many will look at you with curiosity and amusement. You will probably notice that different sections of town have different cultural reactions to nudity. Some may feel mildly intimidated because they still might have issues with their own bodies and your shameless ways are unsettling to their body-phobic world. Just be friendly and respectful and things should be fine. Remember we are all human and we all have the same parts.

"Gymnophobia (from the Greek word for nude gymnos) is the fear of being (or seeing others) naked. A gymnophobic person usually wants to prevent others from experiencing the freedom of not wearing clothes."
Remember, you are "legal" anyway; but if you are concerned, you probably don't need to cover up much to be "legal" as far as the gymnophobes are concerned. With the incredible transforming powers of a little body paint, liquid latex, a strategically placed sock, or a piece of duct tape you can transform the average city streaking naked wild cyclist into "The what-one-might-think-might-be-legal city streaking naked wild cyclist". Be creative: a little imagination can change everything.

Route
This will be a standard ride around the streets of Portsmouth, around 5 or 6 miles, 40 minutes; pretty flat. A nice sedentary pace!

Start on grassy area in front of Rose Gardens at Lumps Fort between Canoe Lake and Eastney - along Sea Front to Clarence Pier - Pembroke Rd and Old Portsmouth - St Georges Rd - Hard - Queen Street - Edinburgh Rd, Commercial Road, Stanhope Rd, Edinburgh Rd, Queen Street, Hard, Museum Road, The Terraces, Osborne Rd, Palmerston Rd, Clarence Parade and back to start.

Legality
Simple nudity isn't illegal in the UK, but using nudity to intentionally cause harassment, alarm or distress may be illegal. Don't act offensively and you are very unlikely to be arrested. We have notified the police of our intention to ride in protest against oil dependency and in celebration of bicycles. They are fully aware that many/most of our riders will be nude and partially nude as we cycle a route through the streets of Portsmouth. The principal concern is to eliminate creepy, predatory, exploitative, destructive and abusive behavior.

Police restrictions
see Police Statement to BBC TV at Portsmouth WNBR 2011

From 2004 to 2011, there have been well over 40 UK Naked Bike Rides with a cumulative total of over 8,000+ riders in 13 locations, and no arrests. In 2011, Portsmouth Police allowed full nudity, with no problems.

It is unlikely that police will object to nudity at future rides in England and Wales. Local police officially acknowledged the legality of full nudity at all seven rides in 2008 and all five rides in 2007. They required people to wear clothes at three English rides (Brighton, Manchester and Bristol) in 2006, but have made no such restrictions at later events.

Public transport
Local buses call nearby (many terminate at South Parade Pier). There is free public car parking at the car park near the naturist beach at Eastney (around 1 1/2 miles), and pay public parking immediately adjacent to the rendezvous. Local rail station Fratton, ride generally south, about 1 mile. Note that disembarking at Fratton involves climbing footbridge stairs, Portsmouth and Southsea may be preferable.

Useful Info
We hope to have 'Community Cycle Centre' present to offer First Aid (to bikes....). The Community Cycle Centre might also have some recently checked-over cycles which you can purchase for a modest donation. Contact them beforehand for details (link below).
Despite a perishingly cold evening, a hardy 143 cyclists took to the streets on June 10, perhaps inspired by the kerfuffle in nearby Portsmouth which dominated local media during the preceding week. Riders were colourful and joyous as they enjoyed the classic 6 mile tour of the city.

Ride details
Assembly point
We will meet on the eastern side of Southampton Common, in the clearing next to Highfield Road and opposite the junction with Omdurman Road. It's also close to the pedestrian underpass if you are approaching from the western side of the Common. Here's a google map showing the spot. If you are using a GPS device, the closest postcode is SO17 1BF.

At 6.30pm we'll hit the streets of Southampton on our beautiful bikes. If you have roller blades, skateboards or other (non-carbon emitting) wheels feel free to use them. The ride will take about an hour most likely.

Dress code
Come as bare as you dare. Nudity makes a great statement, and many of us will be completely naked, but if you're more comfortable in a little clothing, that's fine too. In previous years, riders have worn shorts, bras, swimwear, body paint, wigs, sunglasses etc. Most wear footwear and bring bags to carry clothes. Body painting and adornment, customised bikes and other creative expression are all strongly encouraged.

Body painting at The Art House
We encourage everyone to get painted up with a quick bike-loving, traffic-busting slogan, even if you only have five minutes before the start of the ride. But if you have a little more time, our friends at The Art House (178 Above Bar Street, Southampton, SO14 7DW) have kindly offered a private space from 4pm where you can create something really impressive. Ideally come with a friend and paint one another. We will have some body paints available, but feel free to bring more.

Route
A 6 mile route taking in Portswood, Bevois Valley, City Centre including Oxford Street, and returning via The Avenue to the start location. The 2011 route is shown here. In brief the route will be:
North on Highfield Road, right into Highfield Lane, at junction with Portswood Road, go straight ahead into St Denys Road, then right (past Portswood Cycles). PAUSE for the ride to regroup. Turn left into Portswood Road. Follow Portswood Road / Bevois Valley Road / Onslow Road. PAUSE at the junction of Onslow Road and St Mary's Street to allow the ride to regroup. Then, enter Dorset Street and the Charlotte Place (Jury's Inn) roundabout. Take third exit into E Park Terrace. PAUSE in front of Solent Univ for ride to regroup. Continue down Palmerston Road and Queensway. Turn left on Bernard Street then bear right into Oxford St. PAUSE in Oxford St for a brief break. Second left into John Street and left again on Bernard Street. Continue on Bernard Street until turning right into High St. Follow High St to Bargate and PAUSE to regroup. Continue into Above Bar - take care to avoid pedestrians and dismount if necessary. At the traffic lights at the top of Above Bar, go straight into London Road. Continue onto The Avenue. At Cowherds, take cycle path through The Common, past the pond, then right to the underpass. Finish at the start location on the eastern part of the Common.

Legality
We have notified the police of our intention to ride in protest against oil dependency and in celebration of our bodies. They are fully aware that many/most of our riders will be nude and partially nude as we cycle a route through the streets of Southampton. They are not expected to prevent our nudity.

They are fully aware that many/most of our riders will be nude and partially nude as we cycle a route through the streets of Southampton.

We have been specifically instructed by the police to observe the rules of the road, stopping at red lights and giving way as required at junctions. Please follow this instruction for your own safety and to avoid antagonising non-cyclists. There are several regrouping points on the ride in case the ride gets separated.

Public transport
The start location is a 3 mile ride from Southampton Airport Parkway railway station, which is a main stop on the London Waterloo to Bournemouth and Poole line. Local stations at Swaythling and St Denys are closer still.
History
2011
2010
2010's Southampton ride took place again in warm sunshine after an overcast day that kept everyone guessing. Around 130 souls set off from the Common, ranging from 7-months old to the considerably more mature! For the first time police cyclists rode with us, and their presence was much appreciated. It was smiles all round as we took our usual tour of the city's sights, followed by an extended circuit around the western side of the Common before returning to catch the last rays of sun. Thanks to all riders for turning out and flexing creativity with awesome body paint, bike decoration and costumes!

2009
Southampton had another great ride in 2009! Leading up to the ride, the local media gave much good coverage including a number of live to air pieces for the local BBC radio station. On a dry and 'warm enough' evening 150 riders attended. The convoy was led in fine style by a pair of Penny Farthings dating from the 1890s. We felt that these vehicles from a time before the internal combustion engine neatly debunked the foolish idea that roads are made for cars! Helped by the stately pace of the vintage bikes, the ride stayed closely bunched together which gave a sense of unity. We were greeted warmly by bystanders as we passed, and most car drivers were tolerant (though there were the odd few aggressive exceptions). Though numbers were about the same as last year, it seemed to me there was a greater show of nakedness this time, so hoorah for Southampton riders!

2008
The 2008 ride took place on 6 June and was a great success once more. In sunny weather, in excess of 156 riders enjoyed an extensive tour of the city, and were warmly greeted by onlookers. There was positive coverage in the local press.

2007
Southampton had a really successful first ride in 2007, with 102 riders setting off. The Police allowed us to ride naked, and confirmed no complaints from the public. The riders experienced cheers and smiles as we completed a 6 mile tour of the City. The threatened rain held off long enough for us to finish the ride and even to have leisurely naked picnic at the finish. A great evening!

The World Naked Bike Ride - “All over the ride people are stripping off and getting on their bikes” (The story of the ground-breaking 2005 London ride, narrated by Jon Snow)
