The Next Ride Details

  • Our second ride of the year will be March 14, 2020 Saturday, 11:00 AM -

Please note San Francisco chapter of the WNBR has a total of 5 rides per year. Some of our rides are in conjunction with other cities riding in the northern and southern hemispheres. Other rides are unique to San Francisco, as we have created a WNBR for Earth Day in April and our New Years Day Polar Plunge Ride.

Where we are meeting

The Ride Details

  • Our second WNBR ride of the year is Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 11:00AM -

.It's that time to tune up those bikes and toss those riding duds in the wash, you won't need them for the 11th Annual 2020 So-Hemi World Naked Bike Ride - San Francisco. It's the second of five WNBRs for the 2020 bike naking season and typically one of the two larger WNBRs of the year..

.Each year, our turnout is getting larger and larger, riding bare through the streets of the city. So on Saturday, March 14, 2020 bring your bikes to Ferry Building near Market Street & the Embarcadero Blvd..

.We meet northwest of the Ferry Building, between the Farmer's Market and the Starbucks west of the Ferry Building. We begin gathering at 11:00 AM in the open area along the pier. Please gather as close to the railing and avoid blocking pedestrian traffic on the Embarcadero and also those exiting the Ferry Building. We will have time to do body/face paint and reacquaint ourselves. Bring body paints, watercolors and markers to apply slogans and designs to each other and adorn your bikes with signs. Meet with old and new friends..

.While it is a "naked" bike ride, all are welcome. It's ride as bare as you dare. That is, body paint, rubber latex, bikinis, topless, lingerie, bubble pack, whatever costume you are comfortable riding with. And we have already had over a dozen WNBRs while under cloud of the city anti-nudity ordinance, with NO citations or complaints. However, than it’s best to have a sarong, a beach wrap or shorts ready for quick cover up..

.Our ride is part of a global protest taking place today in many cities throughout Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and other cities in the Southern Hemisphere. Tens of thousands of naked bike riders are protesting the global dependency of our society and economies at the hands of the oil cartels. We want to emphasize the harm this dependency causes to our environment, businesses and social lives. Nobody is unaffected. We want to endorse more bike riding and our nudity expresses our vulnerability to these matters. It also draws attention to our cause..

.This WNBR will focus on our continued world wide protest of the domination and dependency of big oil, our need for continued renewable energy and technological advances to better our planet. And now more than ever, to protest the Trump Administration whose very goals are to benefit big oil, clean coal (?) and put the environment at greater risk than ever..

.Our route will take us through many popular spots in the city such as Fisherman's Wharf, the Marina, Lombard, North Beach, along Embarcadero, the Civic Center, the Haight, and the Castro. You say you can't make it to the start on time? Don't worry, it's a "Do It Yourself" ride. Join us anytime you find us along the route and feel free to leave when you must. It's great fun and an event you shouldn't miss. Tell all your bike, tech savvy and environmentally concerned friends to join us. It's ride as bare as you dare for the 11th Annual 2020 So-Hemi World Naked Bike Ride - San Francisco.

The WNBR Basics

WNBR San Francisco Style

Schedule

  • 11:00 AM: Gather. Meet at the north corner of the pier between the Farmers Market and the Starbucks. Remain dressed until instructed to disrobe for the ride

Route

The route will include our favorite parts of the city such as Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, the Civic Center, the Haight District and the Castro.

Ride Pace and Difficulty

Just try to stay on the right shoulder or in the right lane. With enough riders, we will take up the right lane the whole way. There is often a sand bank on the right shoulder, so the right lane is preferred. Cars will be passing us. Most cars go slow, as drivers and passengers like getting pictures, but there can always be that impatient jerk that speeds by.

Weather

Out of the past ten years, it has been seasonably mild in the 60s. A couple of times it was in the upper 70s and once in the mid 80s. As is typical for San Francisco, dress in layers, at least have a light windbreaker ready, maybe one of those transparent rain covers.

Getting there

You can ride your bike to the start from anywhere in the city. Out of town, you can ride from BART or CALTRAIN or put your bike on the front of Muni buses. If you drive, I suggest parking near the finish line somewhere in the Castro. Check for meters and time limits. There is parking enforcement on Saturdays

Bikes

Your bike is in good shape if you ride frequently, but if your last ride was a WNBR, check your tires, brakes and shifters. Do your maintenainceand tuning before the ride, not during it.

Alternative Participation

Being California, everyone does things differently. We want to offer the broadest possible welcome. First of all, obey all the Laws of Comfort! There's no nudity requirement. Whether you come clothed in a full-length Fun-Fur or just a top hat, come as bare as you dare. Most riders carry some minimal clothing to wear when arriving and departing the group. One bike rental place offered 50% discounts to WNBR riders last year. See the FAQ for more info.

Skates

Skater on Lombard

Secondly, skaters are welcome. Some skaters have joined us repeatedly! Since skaters tend to expend about 2x as much energy, and tend to roll 50% slower than bikers, skaters may wish to follow an abbreviated but comparable route by linking the level grades in the beginning and ending segments of the ride. One very accomplished naked skater in the 2010 SF WNBR skated up and down the steepest part of Lombard Street, The Crookedest Street in the World, to everyone's amazement.

Public Nudity in San Francisco

The Park Police and Park Rangers have jurisdiction at the parks. SFPD has responsibility for the rest of the city and parks. We have First Amendment protection, but always be prepared to cover if asked. In general, we are protected by the First Amendment. The SFPD have been mostly friendly and have offered to escort us if the ride numbers get larger. We wish to stay on their good side, so if asked to dress, don't challenge them. Please, PLEASE don't attempt to speak for the group and antagonize the authorities. Don't assume public observing us nearby want you to mingle close to their space either. If they approach us for pictures, fine. Their are still a number of the public not comfortable with public nudity, so don't impose yourself on them.

Critical Mass with more ass!

Our World Naked Bike Ride - San Francisco Facebook Fan Page is the place to get latest ride info and where to find WNBR Event pages to RSVP.. After Facebook prudes took down our WNBR Fan Page a few years ago, we decided NO photos will be allowed since Facebook has a problem with plain nudity and social protest. If you are here just to look at nude photos, you can look elsewhere.
