* June 14, 2014 SF WNBR: It's time for the Eleventh Annual World Naked Bike Ride - 2014 Northern Hemisphere Edition Pt. I. Each year, our turnout is getting larger and larger riding bare through the streets of the city. It's also our 3rd and expected to be largest WNBR of the year. So on Saturday, June 14, it's time to toss the riding duds in the wash & bring your bikes to Justin Herman Plaza between Market Street & the Embarcadero Blvd.
+
The WNBR Route Map - Saturday 20 April 2024
*We meet on the northeast side of Vaillancourt Fountain, between the fountain and Embarcadero Blvd at 10:30 AM. This gives us an additional half hour early to do body/face paint and reacquaint ourselves. Bring body paints, watercolors and markers to apply slogans and designs to each other and adorn your bikes with signs; meet with old and new friends.

*While it is a "naked" bike ride, all are welcome; it's ride as bare as you dare. That is, body paint, rubber latex, bikinis, topless, lingerie, bubble pack, whatever costume you are comfortable riding with. And we have already had 5 WNBRs while under cloud of the oppressive Weiner anti-nudity ordinance, with NO citations or complaints. If you are still uncertain, than its best to have a sarong, a beach wrap or shorts ready for quick coverup.
+

*Our ride is part of a global protest taking place today in many cities throughout the US, Europe and other cities in the Northern Hemisphere. Tens of thousands of naked bike riders are protesting the global dependency of our society and economies at the hands of the oil cartels. We want to emphasize the harm this dependency causes to our environment, businesses and social lives. Nobody is unaffected. We want to endorse more bike riding and our nudity expresses our vulnerability to these matters. It also draws attention to our cause.
+
<br style="clear:both" />

*We would like to have a post race party and festivities at a point near the end of our ride. In July 2012 for the first time, we road out to Ocean Beach & the Great Highway, so we are going to do that again. We are planning to have a beach party at a point way south of the normal Ocean Beach crowds, and anyone in the group can either plan to end their ride there or ride back to Market Street via Sloat & Portola to return near the start & several BART stations.
+
When riding to the Haight and the Panhandle, we will follow The Wiggle, which minimizes the grade of the inclines.

*Our route will take us through many popular spots in the city such as AT&T Park, Fisherman's Wharf, the Marina, Lombard, North Beach, along Embarcadero, the Civic Center, the Haight, past Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach. You say you can't make it to the start on time? Don't worry, it's a "Do It Yourself" ride; join us anytime you find us along the route and feel free to leave when you must. It's great fun and an event you shouldn't miss. Tell all your bike and environmentally concerned friends to join us, as bare as you dare for the World Naked Bike Ride 2014 - No. Hemi Pt. I.
+
When riding back to Market from the Haight, we will ride a few blocks downhill on Haight St, with a maximum downhill grade of 5%.

Schedule
Schedule
*10:30 AM: Gather. The earlier time allows us to take advantage of the midday warmth. Undress. Apply sunscreen.  Turn sheets & maps distributed and going over route details. Bike checkout & attaching signs / body painting & slogans. Group photo, then pre-start circling in the plaza in front of the fountain
+
*11:00 AM: Gather. Rincon Park, Folsom & Embarcadero Blvd., by the Cupids Arrow. Remain dressed until instructed to disrobe for the ride. Ride begins promptly at noon.
*just  after Noon: Ride starts (approx). Depending on the mood of the group and the amount of media coverage we are getting the ride may start a bit after noon.

*about 4 hours after it starts (approx): Main ride finishes. Riders are free to leave the mass at anytime, as it is a DIY (do it yourself) ride, but why miss out on the fun?

If you need to rent a bike, there are quite a few options at and around the nearby Ferry Building.

Route
Route
<!--
+
<!---->
We have a route worked out that is similar to our July 2012 ride. There is a Giants game scheduled at AT&T Park, so we'll be going by there.
+
The routes vary and will typically include our favorite parts of the city such as the Embarcadero, Mission Bay, the Civic Center, the Haight, the Panhandle, and the Castro. A route plan will be published here and on our other social media pages.
-->
+

Done. Since chilly fog and windy weather stifled our venture out to the Great Highway in the June 2013 ride, the route will basically be the similar to the June ride. If at first you don't succeed... We definitely want as many riders as possible to stick with us at least to Haight Street and what has turned into a traditional stop for Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream
+
When riding to the Haight or the Panhandle, we usually follow The Wiggle, which minimizes the grade of the inclines.
 +

 +
When riding to Market from the Haight, we usually ride a few blocks downhill on Haight St, with a maximum downhill grade of 5%.

Ride Pace and Difficulty
Ride Pace and Difficulty
The ride is at a slow to moderate pace with frequent stops with the intention of maximum visibility to the motoring public, chant protest slogans and allow the public to take photos. We try to stay on level ground but San Francisco is a hilly place, so some hills are to be expected. If the route takes us up the rare steep hill we walk so no one is left behind.
+
Just try to stay on the right shoulder in designated bike lanes or in the right lane. With enough riders, we will take up the right lane the  whole way. Cars will be passing us. Most cars go slow, as drivers and passengers like getting pictures, but there can always be that impatient jerk that speeds by. Do not throw things at cars. Those that do will be told to leave and not return. Sometimes, we are on sidewalks. Always annunciate your approach "rider on your left" and use your bell if equipped. Our policy is "no riders left behind" Please do not take point and do a "Lance Armstrong" imitation. This is a protest ride, not an Olympic sprint. If you are falling behind, yell to the riders in front to hold up. We usually have a sweep rider who can notify our group to hold up for a mechanical failure or other unforeseen issue.

Weather
Weather
March weather tends to be a bit warmer and at times downright hot. Often our March ride is warmer than the main ride in June. Check the local weather at the following sites:
+
Out of the past twenty years, it has been seasonably mild in the 60s. A couple of times it was in the upper 70s and once in the mid 80s. As is typical for San Francisco, dress in layers, at least have a light windbreaker ready, maybe one of those transparent rain covers.

Getting there
Getting there
If you live out of town, please try to use public transportation to get to the start of the ride. Parking in the area is limited and expensive. Both BART and CalTrain take bicycles. If you do drive, try to carpool. There is a fair number of parking on the southern area of Market near the ride's final destination at  the Castro/Market corner. It takes about 10-15 minutes to ride your bike from there to Justin Herman Plaza. Check out these websites for details:
+
You can ride your bike to the start from anywhere in the city. Out of town, you can ride from BART or CALTRAIN or put your bike on the front of Muni buses. If you drive, I suggest parking near the finish line somewhere in the Castro. Check for meters and time limits. There is parking enforcement on Saturdays

Your bike is in good shape if you ride frequently, but if your last ride was a WNBR, check your tires, brakes and shifters. Do your maintenance and tuning before the ride, not during it.

Alternative Participation
Being California, everyone does things differently. We want to offer the broadest possible welcome. First of all, obey all the Laws of Comfort! There's no nudity requirement. Whether you come clothed in a full-length Fun-Fur or just a top hat, come as bare as you dare. Most riders carry some minimal clothing to wear when arriving and departing the group. One bike rental place offered 50% discounts to WNBR riders last year. See the FAQ for more info.

Secondly, skaters are welcome. Some skaters have joined us repeatedly! Since skaters tend to expend about 2x as much energy, and tend to roll 50% slower than bikers, skaters may wish to follow an abbreviated but comparable route by linking the level grades in the beginning and ending segments of the ride. One very accomplished naked skater in the 2010 SF WNBR skated up and down the steepest part of Lombard Street, The Crookedest Street in the World, to everyone's amazement.

Public Nudity in San Francisco
Public Nudity in San Francisco
Liberal San Francisco is not so liberal anymore with the passage of an anti-nudity ordinance that went into effect on February 1st, 2013. Our four WNBR rides last year were a test to see how far we can push the limits. If this year is going to operate under the same leniency, there is no problem anticipated. It is apparent the city officials have studied the matter sufficiently to not desire a legal battle with the First Amendment protection our protests afford.

If you go naked, have a protest message to go with the nudity in the form of body painted slogans or signs. Be prepared to cover up. So far, the authorities have been nice in giving people an opportunity to cover up before giving out citations. Bare breasts are okay. To be legal, you just need to barely cover your private parts. Going naked outside the main group will definitely get you cited. There's more safety in numbers.
+
The Park Police & Park Rangers have jurisdiction at the parks. SFPD has responsibility for the rest of the city and parks. We have First Amendment protection, but always be prepared to cover if asked. In general, we are protected by the First Amendment. The SFPD have been mostly friendly and have offered to escort us if the ride numbers get larger. We wish to stay on their good side, so if asked to dress, don't challenge them. Please, PLEASE don't attempt to speak for the group and antagonize the authorities. Don't assume public observing us nearby want you to mingle close to their space either. If they approach us for pictures, fine. There are still a number of the public not comfortable with public nudity, so don't impose yourself on them.

Bay To Breakers citations! A few nude runners/walkers during the recent 2014 Bay To Breakers were told to cover up, in spite of the so-called written exemptions written into the "Weiner Law" for this event and others like the Folsom Fair that have had a longstanding tradition of nudity. A few nudist activists were given citations. It looks as if a number of SFPD are being told to do an "end run" around the ordinance. If anyone encounters any officers doing "their job" and directing you to cover, please take down their badge numbers and names. You typically have a 5 minute time interval to cover without getting a citation. We have in the past had a good relationship with the SFPD. If confronted, be polite and non-confrontational, try to defuse, not escalate the situation. One person being an ass or a dick (pun intended) can put the remainder of the ride at risk.
+

Inform yourself of the local nudity laws before you bare all in case you have to explain yourself. This (~100 Kbs) (now out of date) contains the actual codes and regulations (with references) regarding nudity. Always treat the authorities with courtesy and respect and dress when ordered to do so. (If you need help interpreting the codes, please seek the advice of a lawyer.)

Schedule

 • 11:00 AM: Gather. Rincon Park, Folsom & Embarcadero Blvd., by the Cupids Arrow. Remain dressed until instructed to disrobe for the ride. Ride begins promptly at noon.

If you need to rent a bike, there are quite a few options at and around the nearby Ferry Building.

Route

The routes vary and will typically include our favorite parts of the city such as the Embarcadero, Mission Bay, the Civic Center, the Haight, the Panhandle, and the Castro. A route plan will be published here and on our other social media pages.

When riding to the Haight or the Panhandle, we usually follow The Wiggle, which minimizes the grade of the inclines.

When riding to Market from the Haight, we usually ride a few blocks downhill on Haight St, with a maximum downhill grade of 5%.

Ride Pace and Difficulty

Weather

Out of the past twenty years, it has been seasonably mild in the 60s. A couple of times it was in the upper 70s and once in the mid 80s. As is typical for San Francisco, dress in layers, at least have a light windbreaker ready, maybe one of those transparent rain covers.

Getting there

You can ride your bike to the start from anywhere in the city. Out of town, you can ride from BART or CALTRAIN or put your bike on the front of Muni buses. If you drive, I suggest parking near the finish line somewhere in the Castro. Check for meters and time limits. There is parking enforcement on Saturdays

Bikes

Your bike is in good shape if you ride frequently, but if your last ride was a WNBR, check your tires, brakes and shifters. Do your maintenance and tuning before the ride, not during it.

Bike Network

Alternative Participation

Being California, everyone does things differently. We want to offer the broadest possible welcome. First of all, obey all the Laws of Comfort! There's no nudity requirement. Whether you come clothed in a full-length Fun-Fur or just a top hat, come as bare as you dare. Most riders carry some minimal clothing to wear when arriving and departing the group. See the FAQ for more info.

Skates

Skater on Lombard

Secondly, skaters are welcome. Some skaters have joined us repeatedly! Since skaters tend to expend about 2x as much energy, and tend to roll 50% slower than bikers, skaters may wish to follow an abbreviated route. One very accomplished naked skater in the 2010 SF WNBR skated up and down the steepest part of Lombard Street, The Crookedest Street in the World, to everyone's amazement.

Public Nudity in San Francisco
