The Next Ride Details

  • Our first ride of the year will be January 1, 2020 Saturday, 10:30 AM -

Please note San Francisco chapter of the WNBR has a total of 5 rides per year. Some of our rides are in conjunction with other cities riding in the northern and southern hemispheres. Other rides are unique to San Francisco, as we have created a WNBR for Earth Day in April and our New Years Day Polar Plunge Ride.

Where we are meeting

The Ride Details

  • Our first WNBR ride of the year is Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at 10:30AM -

It's not just the first World Naked Bike Ride event of the year, it's a beach day. In conjunction with the Riptide Bar on Taraval, it's the 2020 Polar Plunge. What better way to begin a Polar Plunge than to get there with a brief but exhilarating WNBR. Our WNBR group will begin meeting at 10:30am at the Great Highway and Lincoln Way intersection. At 11:30am, we will do a ride down the Great Highway to the Taraval crossing onto Ocean Beach, where the Polar Plunge will take place. If you choose to join us without riding, this is where you can meet us. At Noon, it has been a tradion for several years now to run into the Pacific waters along Ocean Beach in you scivvies, your bathing suits, your tuxedos and tutus and of course, your WNBR riding gear. After this tempting the temps of the Pacific. our group of riders can linger on the beach and socialize, if the weather is inviting, and almost every year it is a pleasnt mid 60s. If not, we can meet for libations up on Taraval at The Riptide Bar.

  • Join our group!!! Keep up to date on this event, future rides and info at our:

The WNBR Basics

WNBR San Francisco Style

Schedule

  • 10:30 AM: Gather. Meet at the northwestern corner of the intersection of the Great Highway and Lincoln way, west of the corner of Golden Gate Park. Remain dressed until instructed to disrobe for the ride

Route

The route couldn't be more basic. We will sprint or leisurely ride south down the Great Highway until Taraval crossing to Ocean Beach.About a ten minute ride.

Ride Pace and Difficulty

Just try to stay on the right shoulder or in the right lane. With enough riders, we will take up the right lane the whole way. There is often a sand bank on the right shoulder, so the right lane is preferred. Cars will be passing us. Most cars go slow, as drivers and passengers like getting pictures, but there can always be that impatient jerk that speeds by.

Weather

Out of the past five years, it has been seasonably mild in the 60s. Only one year was it somewhat chilly. Ideal beach weather most years, so we plan on remaining on he beach after the Polar Plunge until the weather gets to chilly. There is also an after party atthe Riptide bar on Taraval to go to after the Plunge and after our beach gathering.

Getting there

You can ride your bike to the start from anywhere in the city. Out of town, you can ride from BART or CALTRAIN or put your bike on the front of Muni buses. If you drive, I suggest parking near the finish line on the eastern old Great Highway side or on 48th Avenue. You can then stow your bike and retrieve your beach gear.

Bikes

Your bike is in good shape if you ride frequently, but if your last ride was a WNBR, check your tires, brakes and shifters. Do your maintenainceand tuning before the ride, not during it.

Alternative Participation

Being California, everyone does things differently. We want to offer the broadest possible welcome. First of all, obey all the Laws of Comfort! There's no nudity requirement. Whether you come clothed in a full-length Fun-Fur or just a top hat, come as bare as you dare. Most riders carry some minimal clothing to wear when arriving and departing the group. One bike rental place offered 50% discounts to WNBR riders last year. See the FAQ for more info.

Skates

Skater on Lombard

Secondly, skaters are welcome. Some skaters have joined us repeatedly! Since skaters tend to expend about 2x as much energy, and tend to roll 50% slower than bikers, skaters may wish to follow an abbreviated but comparable route by linking the level grades in the beginning and ending segments of the ride. One very accomplished naked skater in the 2010 SF WNBR skated up and down the steepest part of Lombard Street, The Crookedest Street in the World, to everyone's amazement.

Public Nudity in San Francisco

The park Police and Park Rangers have jurisdiction on Ocean Beach. SFPD has responsibility for the Great Highway. We have First Amendment protection, but always be prepared to cover if asked. Ocean Beach is not recognized as a nude beach, but that general is the rule set for the north end where all the parking lots service the beach visitors, Further south the beach gets users from the Sunset neighborhoods and is largely open wide. The Polar Plunge is a favorite activity of these locals and thy don't mind us at all, that is, as long as we don't become a nuisance to them. Please don't give them a reason to call the park authorities, and as it is a part of the Golden Gate National Reacreational Reserve, it is a federal issue.

Critical Mass with more ass!

Our World Naked Bike Ride - San Francisco Facebook Fan Page is the place to get latest ride info and where to find WNBR Event pages to RSVP.. After Facebook prudes took down our WNBR Fan Page a few years ago, we decided NO photos will be allowed since Facebook has a problem with plain nudity and social protest. If you are here just to look at nude photos, you can look elsewhere.
