How to participate

Read the following information first. This page is the most important source of information on WNBR Newcastle. After this page read the other Wiki WNBR Newcastle pages (Newcastle_archive and past year's pages) and have a look at WNBR Australia (official site).

In months before the ride

It may seem like things are quiet between World Naked Bike Rides but the Newcastle organisers are working now to make the WNBR Nudecastle 2007 enjoyable for everyone. In the lead-up to the WNBR there are many other community grassroots events in Newcastle that are of interest to Naturists, Biketivists, Pacifists and Environmentalists. Have a look at the links to organisations that endorse the WNBR in Newcastle (see Newcastle#Endorsement below) and Australia and you will find something that will inspire your passion for expressing yourself for the benefit of the planet. All the organisations that endorse WNBR are friendly though our closest ally is Critical Mass (see Newcastle#Critical_Mass below). WNBR Nudecastle encourages everyone interested in participating in WNBR to also participate in Critical Mass.

Getting email updates before the ride

If you want to have emails sent to you with details of pre-ride events, reminders of the WNBR Nudecastle time and start location, or discuss any apects of the upcoming ride: you need to join the discussion group (see Newcastle#Discussion_group.2Fs below). If you have not got a Yahoo! account, you can set one up for free in about 5 minutes. You can use your existing email account or get a Yahoo! email account for free. You can set the email account up using a nickname if you want to as well. The management of Yahoo! have classified the discussion group as "adults only" but only because they are puritanical prudes who do not know the difference between the human body and pornography. WNBR is nothing to do with pornography so do not worry.

Privacy

You do not have to register, pay money, sign anything or give your personal details to anyone. There are suggestions on the international pages of WNBR websites that say you should complete the on-line registration process. This is NOT mandatory for the WNBR Nudecastle. Vetted media people will attend the WNBR Nudecastle 2007 to photograph and video the event so if you have any concerns about this you should consider painting your face, wearing a novel mask or big dark sunglasses to preserve your anonymity.

Pre-Ride Film Night

  • Venue: The Royal Exchange Hybrid Performing Arts Gallery, 32-34 Bolton Street Newcastle.
  • Date: Saturday the 3rd of March 2007.
  • Time: 8pm.
  • Cost: $5 per person (which is for the use of the venue).

The film night is a pre-ride orientation event where potential participants can make friends with the other riders and ask any questions they have about the ride. (See also Newcastle#Feeling_at_ease below).

WNBR Nudecastle organisers have secured several WNBR documentaries from around the globe which have never been seen in Australia. Exposure to Cars is a feature length film which includes a comprehensive explanation of WNBR, the history of the protest event and includes interviews and footage from many countries. Brighton & Hove in the UK have sent us a series of short films that document their WNBR in June 2006. London in the UK has sent a half hour documentary of their June 2006 WNBR which saw more than 700 participants. We also have a half hour film produced by Rowanmacs - Photography documenting bike activism in Newcastle which features Critical Mass and the WNBR Nudecastle footage from February 2005 and March 2006 rides.

The Actual WNBR Nudecastle 2007

It does not matter if you have done none of the suggested pre-ride activities above because you are still most welcome to take part.

Assemble clothed at Warabrook Station at 3:00 PM on Saturday the 10th of March 2007.

What to bring

Bring your bike, scooter, tricycle, skates or skateboard (in fact any form of human powered wheeled transport). You MUST bring an Australian Standard approved helmet (shoes and bike gloves are recommended). Bring some money for the after ride party and a water bottle. Bring a noise maker like a whistle or party novelty. You can bring sunscreen and body paint if you want though the organisers will try to provide enough for everyone it is uncertain how many people will turn up. Bring swimmers and something to store your minimal clothing things (like a bum bag, a bag for your luggage rack, panniers or basket) while you are riding. Remember you will not have pockets to put things and wearing a backpack will spoil the look of your painted back as would a bulky item on your luggage rack.

Body painting

The organisers will lead everyone to the secret body painting place. Paint yourself and each other with love hearts, peace signs, flowers and biketivist and environmental slogans. When the body painting is complete, the ride will commence.

Magical Mystery Tour

Only the organisers know the route of the ride before hand. The organisers will show you the way as the ride goes along. If you ask where the ride is going before the ride, everyone else will think you are a cop or a voyeurist.

Ride and have fun

During the ride have fun, make noise, sing out your message, chant, obey the road rules and follow the organisers. This is the best part and you will get sore sides and a sore face from laughing and smiling.

Prizes!

The prizes are three bikes in excellent condition donated by Critical Mass Newcastle. The competition judging and prize ceremony will occur at the end of the ride route and before riders dress. Prizes are normally available to be selected and collected at the post ride party.

Prize 1: Encouraging Participation! A bike will be given to the contestant who recruits the highest number of participants to join and complete the ride with the contestant.

Prize 2: Encouraging Female Participation! A bike will be given to the female contestant who recruits the highest number of female participants to join and complete the ride with the contestant.

Prize 3: Best Individual Body Paint! A bike will be given to the rider who completes the ride and who is judged to be best decorated with body paint by the most acclaim of participants who complete the ride.

Rules and Conditions of the Contest

  • Contestants for prize 1 and 2 need to assemble the participants they have recruited at the start of the ride and the finish of the ride for a head count.
  • Participants may not be considered to be recruited by more than one contestant.
  • The deciding head count will be made at the completion of the ride.
  • In the event of a tie in the number of participants recruited who complete the ride, the prizes will be awarded to the rider who has recruited the equal highest number of participants who are judged to be best decorated with body paint by the most acclaim of participants who complete the ride.
  • In the event that prize number 1 is won by a female, then she is not also eligible to prize number 2 if she has recruited the most female riders to join and complete the ride. In these circumstances, prize number 2 will be awarded to the female who has recruited the second highest number of female participants to join and who complete the ride.
  • Prize winners will be determined in the sequence of prize numbers.
  • No contestant is eligible to more than 1 prize.
  • In the event that prize winners cannot agree to which of the three bikes that each winner should take as their prize, the winner of prize 1 has first choice, the winner of prize 2 has 2nd choice and the winner of prize 3 gets the remaining prize.
  • The competition is not open to established WNBR Nudecastle or Critical Mass organisers.

Post ride party

After the prize giving ceremony, all participants are invited to attend a post ride party that will start before sunset. A nice friendly venue has been booked. Feel free to bring a musical instrument and have a jam or a CD to play. The organisers will provide free beer and wine. Please bring some money with you because the fee for the use of the venue and cost of grog has been met by the organisers who would really appreciate your donations to offset these costs. The organisers will also try to ensure that there is some food available.

Publicity: flyers, posters, images etc

These are the current flyer and poster to be used for the WNBR Nudecastle 2007 to help promote participation. Please print these and stick them up where people will see them. Why not colour one in and stick it to your refrigerator? Below them are other promotional images.

Critical Mass

Critical Mass Newcastle and the World Naked Bike Ride endorse and participate in all events held under both names in Newcastle. Critical Mass ride on the first Friday of every month and starts from Civic Park, opposite Newcastle Town Hall. Assemble at 5:45pm for a 6:00pm start. Ride Daily! Celebrate Monthly!

For more information on Critical Mass see: Critical Mass World Information , Critical Mass Australiaor Newcastle Critical Mass Discussion Group or email Daniel.

Feeling at ease

There will be and icebreaker (orientation) social event to help inform potential participants of what to expect during the WNBR Nudecastle 2007 and to make friends with everyone there who intends to ride. (See also Newcastle#Pre-Ride_Film_Night above). Riding in any WNBR is daunting for the first time and worse if you turn up alone and don't know anyone. Participants are encouraged to offer each other support. All participants are encouraged to welcome and engage with everyone who turns up at the beginning of our rides whether they have attended preliminary events or not. Body painting in preparation for rides can be done in segregated groups and without any media present if that request is made.

Women’s Support Woman

Christabel has volunteered for the role of Women’s Support Woman for WNBR Nudecastle 2007. The Women’s Support Woman (WSW) role is to offer special support to women who have any concerns about their participation or potential participation in the event. The WSW will be attending the whole of the event and will be available to help all women participants. The WSW will be making a special effort to ensure that female participants feel comfortable while being a mentor. If you wish to assist Christabel in this role or would like to ask any relevant questions, please email Christabel.

Media

Media enquiries for Newcastle: please contact Marte Kinder the WNBR Newcastle Organiser.

Please think ahead if you want to have a media presence on the day of the WNBR Nudecastle and contact Marte well ahead of time because your involvement will need vetting.

Several freelance professional media people attended the WNBR Nudecastle 2006 including a photographer and a video producer. The photographers and the video producer also attended the 2005 event and are vetted by the organisers. The manner in which these people conducted themselves was impeccable and they portrayed the participants respectfully. The WNBR Nudecastle 2006 was photographed and filmed by our vetted media (apart from the undressing and painting). The still photographs taken by the photographers are available to be viewed in low definition format on the WNBR Newcastle Yahoo! group. High definition photos of 2006 event are available at the WNBR Australia(official website). High definition photos of the 2005 event are also available at the WNBR Australia(official website). The photos are copyright, so permission of the photographer must be sought before they can be reproduced or otherwise used. Credit for the photos must be given. These and possibly other new vetted professional media people will attend the WNBR Nudecastle 2007.
