What's the Main message?

FAQ. Does the ride have a single message?

The main message at times may seem a bit all over the place, but the majority of the rides take to a message against Oil Dependency, burning fossil fuels, and car culture. Most people think we're trying to promote public nudity, but like other protest we're using nudity to symbolize our vulnerability on streets unsafe for cyclist.

Police and The Law

  • If at any time any officers asks you to put on more cloths, or gives you instructions thank them, and do as they say.

If you're in the least bit worried about participating nude or partially clothed, then you're more then welcome to wear as much as you're comfortable with. There is nothing illegal about riding bikes in a group. Cars do it all the time so long as we don't block up traffic for an unnecessary length of time.

"A person is guilty of indecent exposure in the (first or second) degree when (he/she) intentionally exposes their genitals under circumstances in which they know, or should know that their conduct is likely to cause affront or alarm (in the first or second degree pending age of witness.)"

  • The definition of 'genitals' refers primarily to just the visible parts of the penis and vagina.(butts and boobs not included)
  • The law makes no reference to whether the offender commits the act on pubic or private land.
  • The law seems to be distinguishing the intent of those that use nudity as a tool in protests like the WNBRs, and those that use nudity for malicious purposes. Flashers and other sexual deviants are likely to cause affront or alarm, while the World Naked Bike Rides are designed to be family friendly without the intent of causing affront or alarm to anyone. If I had a son or daughter they'd be strapped in some way to my bike with us.
  • It is my understanding the Supreme Court has always ruled nudity in protest as a free speech issue, and should be constitutionally protected as such.
