          • Golden Bay World Naked Bike Ride 2008*****

Golden Bay had the biggest turn out ever on March 8 Saturday's ride. With over 100 participants,

many of them au natural, Golden Bay locals welcomed those many who came from all over New Zealand

and the world to cycle. Some visitors walked wearing bike tires as they wanted to be in the ride

but had not been able to obtain a bicycle.

There were heaps of roadside supporters, clapping and cheering us on. One on-looker joined in and

one motorist took off her top in sympathy.

The 3 km ride was not attended by the local police who have in the past given escort to the ride

and reminded the participants that it is New Zealand law to wear a helmet riding a bike even when

nude.

After the ride, 15 prizes ranging from 2 nights accommodation to a whole smoked salmon were given

to the participants at the Totally Roasted Cafe in Pohara. Local businesses donated al the prizes

the quirky categories (such as squishiest bum and best posture.) What an enjoyable day!

After the ride and ceremony, four riders carried on the message by cycling nude the 11 highway

kms back to the town of Takaka.

And the world became a better place as now we all know the benefits of more people on bikes. Bike

use leads to less hauling of two tons of metal and less burning of fossil fuels and biofuels

(that are replacing people's food crops).....See you next year.
